Pointless nostalgia, unhealthy mod culture, they're dumb, chasing 1 MPG... you can invent other reasons I'm sure

 

Some people dont want electronics and iirc the manual hubs dont spin the cvs unless engaged. Thus saving wear on your boots.

 

I’m not anout to pull a diff at 4 in the morning in 8” of snow.

Yeah the reason I've heard is something about the CV's and thus the diff not spinning when not engaged. Less wear.

Pretty sure toyota did away with them also cause it caused problems with the diff if you never engaged 4wd...use it or loose it...but thats just what ive been told not sure if its correct

 

The hubs have idler bearings and an idler bushing and pawls that wear, if anything its just deferred wear. Some of the bushings in the Taco manual hubs are NLA now.

 

I mean i stay out the daily thread to not annoy people like him

 

And you gotta get out and turn the hubs, fck That

 

Eh, I dunno about that, maybe some rust scale from condensation could occur, but that front diff is so small that even a good bump in the road will splash the internals with oil

 

I got lucky and installed brand new OEM hub assemblies and dials sans dial faces since I had the original ones powder coated.

People always try and make this argument, but you turn them in well before you're in a situation that you'd need 4WD for. Like when I had them, I just locked em in at the beginning of winter, usually right before first snow and unlocked em when regular rain started again in a couple months. Or like a wheeling trip, I lock em in when we air down and two weeks later or whatever I'd unlock em when I air up

 

I usually left mine locked during winter or if a big rainstorm was coming up. Never really had a problem.

Plus the extra 2 mpg with them unlocked made up for it when I was pinching pennies on minimum wage
