How's the A/C in the quad cabs?

Looks like I'll be getting a 2019 Tacoma quad cab at the end of the year when they reduce the prices for the 2020 models coming out. A main concern is the a/c. We've got little ones and was wondering how cool the a/c is? Being that the cab space is smaller than an SUV, that should help it get cooler quicker, but I wanted to ask you guys. I'll probably be getting a TRD Sport, if that matters.

 

Test drive, test drive, and test drive. Sit in the back seat and crank the A/C. See how long it takes to cool down. Warmer days/months are best for this test

 

I've already test drove one, but putting car seats in one for a test drive and taking a cruise...would they let me do that? Haha. As long as it's better than my 07 Murano, with only a couple vents for the back (that barely puts any air out), that's all I care about.

 

my AC is very cold. ive seen temps from the low 90's to the high 90's and i usually keep my AC temp 1/4 turn from the max setting

 

Granted I don't live in an area where A/C is needed as much as in the south or back east, but my A/C system is a problem in my family. My Sport has the Premium and Technology package with the dual zone climate zone. The issue I have is, I love the A/C on and the rest of my family all complain it is too cold. My family regularly complains in the back seat it is too cold. So for us it definitely is effective.

Your best bet is take a test drive. And if the dealer doesn't allow you to try out baby seats or booster seats for the kids, then clearly they are not interested in selling and you need to go to a different dealer. You need to know if the vehicle works for you and your family. That is better to know on the test drive than after purchase!

 

Kids don't need it as bad as adults do! I heard the A/C is better in an Off-Road model compared to a Sport.

 

The A/C works quite well especially when looking to get air to the back seats. We vacationed from NY to NC this summer, with two kids in the back. Never had a complaint about not getting enough cool air. Usually had to turn it down after a little while.

 

in North Texas and i say it's totally effective. but I'm not a hardcore A/C user like most here. cools fast.

2016 Quad cabber here, my SR5's A/C has been great. I am used to SUV cabs and my Tacoma's smaller space (and white paint) get the rig cooled off quickly. I don't have the auto cooling to dual zones buy its been great. I never have to leave it on high and I'm in VA with some humidity and 80/90s without lack of proper cooling.

I think you should get an SR5 though, sports are overrated. Save your cash and get mods.

EDIT: I also have 'two utes' that ride back there occasionally and they have yet to complain

 

Babies can withstand nearly any climate on Terra w/o climate or gravitational support systems.

Luna, Mars, or Titan, not so much.

Really depends how hot it is where you are. A/C seems to work great until it starts reaching above 110

 

I live in Fla and have a dark grey with black interior. The AC is weak, but adequate. Yesterday it was high 90s and I ran the AC on high for my entire trip. I routinely run it on high during the summer. Not sure I have had another car or truck that needed to do so. My kids hate it because there are no vents in the back. Only the floor vents.

Don't wait for a price drop on the 2019s. It won't happen. You might as well get a 2020. It will pay off in the long run.

You know that boring lame silver sky color? That sucker would repel heat in the summer like no other car I've owned. I made the mistake of switching to magnetic grey, which doesn't do so well in the summer, but since I started using a windshield shade it's almost as tolerable. That said, in the space of a 10 minute drive that cab cools down from 105 outside/120+ inside to 105 outside/70 inside. Even for a pickup that's quick.

 

It actually works really well... I'm not sure how common it is in trucks, but I noticed that there are vents under the front seats that push air to the back...I have seen a lot of cars / SUVs that don't have this and it takes a while to get cold in the back without them. I don't have any kids but my dog loves to get down into the floor where the cold air comes out.

It's amazing how everyone these days will die without A/C. Several of my parent's cars didn't have A/C, and I used to spend the summer work days at my grandmother's house, in a city two story brick flat without A/C.
My 2019 A/C will freeze you out BTW

 

I think I have driven shitty cars my whole life before the Tacoma... My last 2 both didn't have rear vents
