Most of the farms hereabouts are dairy farms and considerably smaller than the acreage you farm.
Mostly Mennonite owned these days. Like Amish but with refrigerators and cars. Black cars. :p

I spent the first ten years of my life on a dairy farm.
It's not a particularly easy life, and was harder back then.
I remember a lot of manual labor and especially shoveling...manure, corn, silage, etc.
Repairing fences, throwing rocks on a wagon after plowing brought them to the surface...
I wasn't big enough to do much of all that, but I sure remember it.
I was driving a tractor at six years old when it was time to bale hay. Easy, just drive straight and very slow.
And of course milking twice daily, without fail. And no vacation from that.

We had lots of barn cats. All they got was milk tank rinsing and bone meal.
They were expected to survive on rats and mice...and they did.
The place would have been overrun with rodents without them.

I have a soft spot for cats. :)

From what I see, the local farmers plant a lot of winter wheat. (That and soybeans are the cash crops.)
They immediately plant corn around late June, after the wheat harvest.
A lot of that corn is chopped green for silage to feed the dairy cows.
They make a good deal of hay as well.

Sigh. I still miss it...in some ways. In other ways, not. :p

For years I have always hated getting stuck behind slow moving farm equipment rolling through downtown with their huge, take up the whole road loads this time of year.

Im about to be that person...
