Yeah, I need to repaint mine. I've been putting it off for that very reason, though. I don't want to wear a gas mask whenever I drive it for the next week.

My thoughts have turned towards fall / winter a little earlier than usual this year

Cleaned my chimney yesterday and today moved my firewood for this year from my back storage area to the woodshed by the house

Mixture is about the same as last year , fir , arbutus (madrone) , a bit of plum and the odd piece of buckthorn cascara

I'm going to be building a shop / storage building at my back 40 this fall and wanted to get the firewood out of there before any excavations start

I'm going to do a build thread for the shop when I get started , I'll put a link in here for anyone thats interested

Considering the summer we've had this year combined with leaves starting to turn already I'd say you're right on track for timing.

Don't know if this is the place to ask but had anyone ever done a conversion from a gas fireplace to a wood stove? It's in the wall that seperates our living room from our bedroom.

How do you like burning fir? I can get pretty much as much as I want from work (timber off-cuts), curious how it compares.

Its all anybody burns out here on the coast with the exception of a bit of madrone or big leaf maple

Its good for a softwood , especially the tighter grain wood which is likely what you would have from the timbers you guys are using

Good to hear. A lot of the guys I work with heat with wood, most have good access to oak/maple/ash/black locust though so almost all the fir ends up as fuel for the kiln.

I've gotta be a little more creative lol, there's a couple pallets of some nice RFKD fir sitting outside the shop, I think I'll grab it.

In my old house I did radiant heat in the slab and it was great. It's a little more to put the insulation and tubing in but you only get one chance to do it and if you never use it you are only out a few bucks compared to the rest of the project. Are you considering ICF?

Just found this thread and it makes me wanna add more to my pile but I only have an outside fire pit to use. The next house WILL have a wood burning fireplace no matter what!!

Fire pit is stainless steel ring 36” round by 18” deep. B6CAB2CF-5ED7-4206-8546-94CB14A71AD4.jpg2AB18266-AB4B-4E07-9B6D-32F386B3DA0F.jpgB0EED6E4-094E-4147-ADCF-030A3551ABB4.jpg8A63079F-AB8F-414F-A2A8-2E400D2850C9.jpgF0B650ED-687D-48EF-86E0-BCB176DE2B63.jpg

Made some progress for cold weather. Got a trailer of dry, downed locust up and split. Probably need another trailer load or so split to get through winter. Next project is cleaning the stove and chimney.

Well, I finally caved. The last couple of summers it's been harder and harder to find time to hand-split 6 cord of wood, between 50+ hour work weeks, gardening, social obligations, etc. And since I'm not about to trade wood heat for oil, I needed a backup for when I've got a time crunch. I can still split by hand at about the same pace when I'm working with a nice straight grain, but this is definitely MUCH faster at dealing with knots (which, annoyingly, made up a pretty good part of this year's splitting)

Give the truck a case of the squats yesterday. Full load of green oak, but still had about 2 inches to go before she was resting on the bumps.

Nice wood, but the guy that I got it from doesn't know much about running a chainsaw. Said he had everything worked up into 'stove length' but apparently it was for several different stoves. Some pieces are 13" long, some are nearly 24"

I was that guy! Finally made a rig to get the wood all the same length. A stick with a washer on one end and a magnet on the other. Zip a little cut, put the washer in the cut and zip the next cut spot...and so on. Easy peasy.

I used to have a throw off pile, after it got big enough I'd cut them to the proper length to burn.

I just cut it between 16-18" , after 32 years in carpentry you get pretty good at eyeballing that kinda thing lol
