I dont think its going to be that easy. The 1234 refrigerate uses a different oil. Im not sure but the compressor may be different. How do you plan on charging it because 134 and 1234 use different ports?

Yeah, it would probabaly require a full system flush out and proper oil?

Pretty sure 1234yf also uses pag though. Not sure if its identical.

I wouldnt think the compressor would care much about the different refrigerant.

As for fittings, adapters exist to hook up your r134a quick connects to the 1234yf service ports.

This is out of warranty i speak of though. Im not going to go switch a perfectly working system lol.

I just took my 2018 in for the 4th time due to the ac going out. 14,000 miles on it. I’m a little upset now since last time I took it down and they said they fixed it but when I drove off I turned the ac on and no cold air came out. I had to turn around and drop it off again. I called the corporate office last time to complain. Since then they have been taking me more seriously. I would call corporate ASAP. If my ac goes out again I’m going to go with the lemon law. I have a 2 and a 3 year old that have to suffer ever time this happens. I’m not to happy with Toyota right now. I didn’t spend that much money for problems. They need to get their act together.

You need to take it to a different dealer. There is a known problem with a leak at the evaporator. Was dye added? Blame the dealer
first then Toyota. Every vehicle manufacturer has issues and Toyota has fewer then most. For the dealer to put it outside without confirming the issue has been dealt with shows incompetency.

    Hi Everyone:

The AC compressor went out on my 2017 Tacoma - according to Toyota - and they wanted $3,200.00 to replace it! I couldn't believe the price. In the end, it wasn't the compressor at all. The "compressor lockout sensor" was non-functional, so the wrench turners at the dealership condemned the entire compressor. I found an independent shop that fixed it for 1/4 the cost without replacing the compressor. There's more info in the attached document.

Moral of the story is don't believe Toyota when they tell you to replace the entire compressor - make them check the lockout sensor - or take it to an independent.

    Good luck -

    Guy

Thanks for the tip! Sorry about your struggles.

I'll put this in my files in case I experience something similar in the future.

    Thank you!

    Hello,
Just went through this whole thread and I found some answers, but wanted to give some details on my own problem and see if it matches up with any of the situations y'all have been experiencing.
My 2016 Tacoma has had an A/C problem since I bought it. I bought it in Feb in Texas and moved in CO in April. In between those months I experienced a couple of days of above 90 degree weather in TX. My A/C doesnt want to blow cold air when the outside temp reads above 96 degrees. I called the dealer and they told me to bring it in, but since I was in the middle of a move to a different state, it wasn't possible. Once I got to CO, I didn't experience the A/C problem because temperatures dont get that high. I moved back to TX after a year, and that summer the problem started back up. Sometimes the cold air would kick on after 20+ minutes of driving, or sometimes it didn't kick on until after the outside temperature read well under 96 degrees again. I toggled with all of the A/C options, no change. The temperature blowing out was 100+. When I took it to the dealership, they ran diagnostic (yes, i had to pay the fee), they did the dye and recharged, determined there was no leak and they couldn't figure out the problem. They found a service bulletin about an additional fan that was suggested to be installed, but that wouldn't be covered by my warranty. After taking it to the same dealership two times and them keeping it overnight each time, I gave up. A year down the road, the next summer, I try again with a different dealership. I told them my trials with the last dealership, even gave them the name of my service tech and the number to the dealership, also told them about the bulletin they found. I was still charged AGAIN for the same diagnostic fee, where they did the exact same thing the other dealership did with the same results.. NOTHING. Though, this time they couldnt seem to recreate the problem so they treated me like I was an idiot. As soon as I got my truck back from them keeping it for two days, the A/C was blowing HOT. I had to go get a thermometer and take a video of the even taking place for them to take me seriously. But of course, everytime I take my truck in it decides to work perfectly. I talked to the main man in charge of service, he took one quick look at the engine and even though my A/C was blowing cold at the time he said the radiator was WAY TOO HOT, meaning it wasnt working properly. Unfortunately I couldn't leave my truck there that day. Through all of this, after many calls to the warranty administrator, the dealership I bought it from, the dealerships that had worked on it, I was no closer to finding a solution. I gave up again. I am not coming up on the end of my extended warranty, so I am trying again. My truck has been in the shop for two days now. They believe me that there is a problem but they can't recreate the problem and I guess don't know what to do from there. They run the truck for a long time and say the A/C works just fine. The problem ALWAYS occurs for me when I leave the alone all day while I am at work then start it up about 4 to 5pm. I think they cant recreate it because they aren't listening to me when I say let it sit out in the sun, I dont know.
I was hoping there would be someone that could give me advice on this?

Check your temperature gauge the next time it's not working , maybe it is something to do with the radiator getting to hot .
