However, you are assuming their intentions are to promote longevity above all else. We really don't know if that's the case. In fact, I would argue that engineering our engine with all the valves and multiple injectors etc means they are NOT prioritizing longevity over all else, fuel economy is above that.

Is the 10k oil change interval so they dont spend as much during ToyotaCare? We don't know.

I would never ever wait 10k to change my oil the first time unless my intention was to get rid of the vehicle prior to 100k. However, I think for the vast majority of automobile owners who purchase it when new, 10k is fine because the added wear wont show up until after 100k.

OP: I always do mine around the 1st 500 miles to get out the break-in materials and then around 3k and then 10k.

There was a pretty good candid interview with Toyota and their primarily goal is reliability. It's what their reputation is based on especially in the truck market. Dealerships make a TON of money on maintenance, it would make more sense to have more frequent changes, thats why places like Jiffy Lube say 3k miles...

10k is the lowest interval on modern engines running synthetic, the heavier the weight, the longer the oil can run.

    EDIT: Found it
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YppBqPCbwqc

17:30 Mike identified that toyota has the highest QDR and it's their bread and butter, Quality Durability and Reliability and that's what they focus on, "You can drive a vehicle anywhere but you need a Toyota to make it back"

A lot of poeple dont like Mike but QDR is Toyota culture

    You forgot to add,
I am not doubting blackstone, but I am still going to do 5k even though they say 10k or more is just fine.

I know a guy who has 2 2016 V6 Tacomas and he runs the cheapest 0w-20 available, Supertech from Walmart. He runs a safety mitigation/inspection firm and does contractor work all over the southwest. He’s nearing 400k miles between the 2 trucks, does his own maintenance, and has had no issues. He hauls and tows on a daily basis in Arizona/Nevada/Cali and runs around 7500 mile intervals. These trucks are plenty reliable, once you get past the regular TW whiners and F-150 aficionados

There's gonna be a million differing opinions on this. I'm in the mindset that the initial oil change needs to be done sooner than 10k to clean out the metals and break in---sure the filter catches it, but its a piece of mind for me. My following changes i do about 7500 miles or if i know ill hit that mark during the middle of winter ill change it before it gets too cold out. How anal you are really depends how long you plan to keep your car. My coworker told me the other day he's always about 5-10k over miles on his changes but he only keeps his cars every 3 years or so.

Nope. They are run, tested, drained, refilled and then installed in the truck.

They said to go to 12K. Now that I'm out of warranty, I keep it at 10K just because the numbers are easy.

Nothing wrong with questioning at all. It's when people are unwilling to make a reasonable assumption that most of the big auto manufacturers know what they are doing most of the time.

If you don't trust it, go verify it. Don't tell people that Toyota is a bunch of idiots because paw paw changed his oil every 3,000 miles and he got 100,000 miles out of his 1970 Ford F150. Cars last hundreds of thousands of miles longer than they used to (how's that for planned obsolescence?). People buy new cars because they want a new car, not because they have too.

Did you ever have a 12,000 mile UOA?
From my understanding, 0W20 is fine...until it isn't. When it goes, it falls apart fast.

Sure they do. They also have a filter to catch it before it's pumped through the engine.

    No. It's just overall easier to keep a multiple of 5k maintenance schedule..... I don't want to do a 5k, 10k, 12k, 15k, 20k, 24k, 25k, etc. maintenance schedule.

As far as the "when it goes, it falls apart fast" is there any data to back that up? What would make it any different than any other oil as far as longevity? I'm not saying it is or isn't true, but where did this info come from?

From the mouth of a STLE certified CLS...
I should have added, relatively speaking, compared to say, a like base 5W30. When the additives get stretched, the polymers degrade and sheer more.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a 0W20/10,000 mile kind of guy.
I was just curious to see one of your 10K intervals vs a 12K interval. Trust but confirm kind of deal(not you, the CLS).

Im sure they will/do, for a fee every other 5k. Unless you prepaid for a maint. plan other than Toyotacare.
Or if you are like me, and don't drive that much. My 12 month oil change will be just over 3,000 miles.

I doubt that. They rotate your tires every 5k and change your oil every 10k.

    I would recommend a friend change theirs at: 500 miles, 3k, 10k, 20k, 30k, etc.

Both sides make sense. Oil has improved. The engineers know what works.

However, I’ve seen the pictures of oil post break-in. It apparently is fairly common to have very small metal shavings in the first oil change. And Toyotacare costs money. Every 5k would cost 2x every 10k. On 300k trucks that’s $12+ Million.

So, do what they say but throw an extra change in early just in case.

The lack of facts or data that people bring to an oil thread is hilarious. I’ll continue to change mine every 7-8k with the cheapest stuff on the shelf and sit back and laugh at some of these posts. Personally testimony and “expertise” doesn’t override data analysis by experts.
