Here's the latest update on my case. The body shop submitted the estimate to remove the bed, remove the nose, strip down the entire cab and nose section, repaint them and re-clear coat them using a "blended" formula to match what's already on the bed. Then put everything back together. Toyota has approved the estimate! So now I've got a start date of June 24th. Toyota will provide a rental for the entire duration my baby is in the shop. Wish I could have gotten them to just do over the entire truck but I'm happy with getting the entire cab done. The defect did start appearing on the tops of both front fenders and the doors and it's been getting worse and worse on the hood so the sooner we get this taken care of the better! I'll provide pics when it's all done!

Well Toyota finally painted the side that was flaking. Turned out good can’t even tell. I just hope the driver side doesn’t do the same. Toyota said if it starts to peel they will cross that bridge when we get there.

I just received warranty approval to fix this same issue on my 2017 Tacoma Limited 4X4.

Let me add my 2017 blazing blue pearl Tacoma to the list of paint issues. I purchased it from a Toyota dealer as a Toyota "Certified" vehicle. As I was first looking at the truck I noticed the top of the left bed side looked faded. Salesman said maybe someone spilt something on it. It was obvious that it was not a spill. He was "nice" enough to offer to paint it for $500... rofl. I declined but worked out a price and purchased. Long story short, it had already had the roof, hood and sail panels painted b4 I purchased it. Just had it at Toyota today to have rep review it and waiting on decision... damn salesman ... 16k miles and he was going to charge me 500 for a warranty item...

Thanks for sharing this. You're the first one I've heard of the mention a bedside, everyone else has been roof, hood, fenders. I'll have to keep an eye on mine now.

Yep, roof and hood painted already. It's the tops of the bed rails and where the rear quarters flare out....keep an eye on the edges.

Well, Toyota said they would fix the issues... bed sides were on the list and I asked that they make the bodyshop that did the hood to make it right as there are da marks and what looked to be some cracking. The truck has been in the bodyshop since Tuesday.. fingers crossed that the make it right this time. More to come....

Nope...purchased it about 2 months ago with 16k on it. The dealer I purchased it from had me take it back to the Toyota dealer that had the paint fixed the first time (almost a year to the day). So I'd imagine they are making the bodyshop (farmed out) redo the hood along with doing the bedsides.

Every time I see the thumbnail of this image when browsing this forum section, I always immediately think of a submerged submarine, specifically the fin, that has a lot of air bubbles coming out of it.

I just had to say that. I'll leave now.

]I have the same issue with my 2017 Tacoma. Same color. Only on the roof. Just noticed it last week while looking out of my 2nd floor window. :( Will try the dealer next week.

Sorry to hear that. I figured that wasn't factory paint failing like that. Be vigilant with the shop doing the correction. My wife's Grand Cherokee had the hood done at the time of purchase, and started developing defects after about 6 months. In addition, they never matched the orange peel and it always looked off to me. This was after two additional repaints.

I wonder though, why in the heck would the roof ever need to be repainted?

How often do you wash your truck? How often do you wax?

I managed to get the dealer to "fix" the issue. They had a 3rd party bodyshop redo it. I think they took some of the old clear coat off and recoated it. Trying to get exactly what they had done was impossible... very vague:( looks much better..for now.

This truck was washed 2 times a week and double waxed every other month. What's happening to the paint has absolutely nothing to do with maintainance and everything to do with quality which is why they are covering the paint under warranty.

This x1000. It's a paint defect, not a care issue. I get so tired of everyone immediately blaming lack of care for this problem when its clearly happening to a large number of trucks.
