Thank you for sharing this. Prayers for you and all the other first responders out there. Thank you for what you did and do.

My dad was a firefighter for a major city, he drank a lot on his days off. It never dawned on me as to why until I read this story. I learned to drink by watching him, so glad we have both quit. I was a volunteer fireman for 12 years when I was younger, saw some horrific things as well. Never thought they bothered me but I can still remember them like it was yesterday.

I haven't had a drink since November of 2018 and as much as I would like to say it's all me, the truth is that Kevin O'Hara's YouTube channel played a large part. His channel is called Alcohol Mastery and it's outstanding IMHO.

I haven't watched any of his stuff but I've always looked at it like this: Whatever works. We have one life here and that's all we get. So for those that have struggled or maybe still are struggling, there is a way out. You might have to find that for yourself but the first step is asking for help. If there is one take away from this thread it would be this. If you truly have an addiction there is help out there. There is a support system available. Whether that be your family, friends, maybe faith for some people, to sheer willpower. My hope is to keep someone from choosing the path that I chose. I chose very poorly. But I was very lucky and came out the other side with a different perspective.

Thanks for creating this thread and sharing something so personal/difficult, there may be people that never post their story here but were helped. The contributions of fellow members here are an invaluable resource now and in the future.

Thank you Craig for posting this! You are a man that we can all look up to! I know that was not your intention but I can't help myself. I look up to you not for all the tough situations you went through (even though they are very admirable), I look up to you for being willing to tell your story in hopes of helping someone else. All of us have our (demons in life) that we deal with but very few are "man enough" to openly discuss their negative experiences as a means in "helping a friend". Congrats on your new beginning!!!! May God Bless you and your family my friend!

I'll be honest... It was kind of a hard decision when I posted this back in 2013. I had only been sober for a year at that time. But... It seemed too important a subject to keep to myself when I knew that there had to be others out there struggling with the same issues. Maybe not the issues that I struggled with but that is beside the point. However someone gets into the position that a substance is controlling you and you aren't controlling the substance, it's too important to ignore. So my hope was, if I can help just one person then it will be worth it. I certainly didn't know it would blow up like this but I am very grateful. It's not just my story. It's all of our stories. I don't want the credit. We all share in this credit together. So it has become "If we can help one other person then we have made a difference". So I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping to keep this thread alive. If it weren't for all of you... we wouldn't have this resource to come to and support each other. So I thank you all!

Keeping this thread alive because it beyond deserves it. The best thread on TW and the entire www. My appreciation and gratitude cannot really be put into words but thank you from the bottom of my heart - to all firefighters, LEO, paramedics, military, etc. Saved my ass a few times and will pay it forward
