There is hardly anyone around here that raises wheat anymore. We used to plant it every year, cut the wheat and bale the straw. The closest mill that will even buy wheat is 50 miles away in Kansas City. Milo is another grain crop that is not raised around here anymore, no market for it either.

Dairy and hog farms are about a thing of the past too. Most are corporate owned now. You can’t even go to the local stockyards sale and buy a milk cow or hog anymore.

Just south of here in Weston Mo they used to raise a lot of tobacco. There was the largest sale barn in the Midwest there and would sell the tobacco. I bet there ain’t a dozen people around here that raise tobacco anymore. They have to ship it east to even sell it. Plus there ain’t any kids today that want to do the labor it takes to put tobacco up. Pretty hard dangerous work and they would rather set on their ass than make money putting tobacco up.

And yes even when I retire from my normal job I will still farm until I die. Through good times and bad, there is truly nothing like it!
