yep. if you are patient, you can get exactly what you want pretty easily. my tacoma took 2 months, my tundra was in the works for about 4.

 

Wish I'd done this. Would have been easier to get what I'd wanted, and it wouldn't have come to me as a bucket of swirls off a different dealers lot out in the desert.

I have the confirmation from Toyota where they accepted my order and it was placed into the build queue..

MOST dealers want you to buy whats on the lot or if you are lucky, they will trade allocations. They don't want to do deal with orders as it takes more time and effort on their part for a sale that is months out.

 

I think of it more like a reservation than an order. They build 1 million trucks in 1000 possible configurations. When you "order" a truck with a certain combination of options, they look into the build queue and say "truck 374 233 matches that request exactly."

The dealership then "reserves" that truck to be sent to them and then sold to you.

If you could actually custom order a Tacoma it would be like a Ford with 500 options that you can pick and choose from.

 

You don't understand how Toyota builds and markets their vehicles. I don't have to stand on the Sun to know it's on fire. Maybe if you weren't such a smartass you might learn something.

 

You can custom order a Tacoma based on a parameters set by Toyota.

What you described is *typically* how it is done as that is the fastest (this is how I got my Tacoma). Toyota has a set build queue on cab configuration, color and trim. These are allocated to dealers and they can freely trade with other dealers, assuming the other dealer accepts the trade. Once you have an allocation you can select or modify options up until 1-2 weeks before the build date. Usually these changes will get accepted but not always for various reasons. Some accessories are added at port which makes some things easier to add or subtract.

You cannot get something Toyota has not specified as a valid build - like a DCLB with MT, pro color on non pro truck, etc.

When I ordered my tundra, we put together the configuration and did the paperwork for intent to buy. Toyota then took this, verified the build, accepted it and placed it into the build schedule a few months out. This is not the norm and a lot more work. A lot of dealers will not do this and are not aware of the process. Your best bet is a high volume dealer. The dealer will also usually want some kind of commitment from you for the hoops they have to jump through.
