Muffler Replacement Help

Hi All,

I'm down to one hanger holding my muffler and tailpipe on due to rust and I'm looking to put a new muffler and stainless pipe on so I don't have to worry about rust in the future. I think I've narrowed down the muffler to the

$124 Borla 40664 Turbo XL Center/Offset Universal Performance Muffler

Borla 40664 Turbo XL/ProXS. My question is, do I need one with an offset inlet/outlet? I've searched the forums and the internet to find the answer but can't seem to find it. All I know is I need a 2.25" diameter inlet/outlet. FYI I have a 3.4 V6 4x4. Thank you!

 

What does your current muffler look like? Get under there and look at it. That should give you an idea of what you need.

 

I bought a stainless steel #13745 Magnaflow muffler & 2 stainless band-clamps (love those things!) from Summit Racing. My exhaust pipes were still good, so all I had to do was piece in the new muffler & fabricate a custom hanger out of 3/8” stainless rod to utilise the stock hanger insulators.

 

It looks like center in and out, but I vaguely remember seeing in a thread (that I can't find anymore) someone mentioning offset, which is why I'm a little confused. I think center in and out is what I'll go with, but I just wanted to be sure before I pulled the trigger.

The dimensions are 20" x 7.5" x 9.25" and it looks like its offset/offset. The dimensions on the Borla are 19" x 4" x 9.5". Here's a video of the 40664 muffler on a 4runner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iI39tF-0bvU. I really like the sound of that muffler and if he got it to fit it's obviously possible. I think I'm going with the center in offset out because that's the only muffler they make that's 19" long. I know I'm just throwing words out at this point, I tend to overthink things a lot .

 

It likely doesn't really matter, especially if you're getting all new piping too. Sounds like your hangers are rusty, so you're likely to end up cutting them off entirely and welding new ones on. When you do that, you can install the new hangers pretty much anywhere you need.

If you're having a muffler shop do the work, they'll be able to take care of that no problem.

 

Honestly, don't go by the sounds from a video. I've seen many people get bummed out when they realize the sound isn't quite what they thought based on a video. It always sounds different in real life.

But yeah, if you're doing a whole new exhaust, you'll be able to get it up in there in pretty much any orientation you want.

Haha thanks. As much as I like the look, I think I should probably find a more permanent solution. I'm also going with the Borla since they seem to be high quality and from what people have discussed they don't make the truck sound like a rice cannon. I also don't want to have my muffler rust out every couple years dealing with the salt and chemicals from winter. Thanks for the replies!

 

Get one of these, they sell them at any auto parts store (called universal exhaust hangers), I use it on my tail pipe since I cut it shorter. Bolts up to one of the existing holes on the frame.

 

make sure the inlet/outlet of the new muffler is around 2.5" to 3", it'll fit with some pipe extending. Factory exhaust pipe dimensions are 2.25.
I got a 14" FM muffler, a bit louder than factory, but not loud and raspy. Don't be those ricers putting glasspacks and extreme sound mufflers on a v6 or i4, unless you got a SC of course.
