I drove a TRD Sport 4x4 at work this past Saturday

And you guys on this site were not lying when you said the auto trans was wonky. The thing was really rev-happy even when you lightly accelerate. Can't decide what gear to stay in.

When my music is really loud and i need to go in first really fast because i wasnt paying attention, i accidently put it in reverse couple times now. Haha:D I realize it almost right away tho cuz the camera turns on.

Never had 6 spd with reverse right next to first. It comes in handy when you need to rock the truck back and forth to get out of sticky situations.

Any idea why aisin does that? Just curious.

I don't know how you can mistake 1st and reverse, atleast on my 19 you really have to pull a little harder over for reverse.

No , but really that was in first couple months of ownership. Im used to having reverse to the right and down.

I’ve had 3 different 6 speed patterns and I like the Tacoma’s best. If you do hit reverse by mistake your generally stopped and the camera and the beep let you know your error. I had a Dakota that was right and down, a couple of times I missed 6th and ground reverse. The worst was a Ram 2500 company truck that had reverse right and up, i can’t tell you how many times I missed 5th and hit reverse resulting in terrible noises.

For those interested in displaying the shift pattern, here's the factory decal for the console.

I said it before that the only problem that I had was when I left it parked in reverse. That feels like 1st. It just took a bit of retraining to check it and / or the view on the head unit before rolling out.

I don't like reverse on the left side of the pattern for slightly quicker direction changes.

did it a bunch of times, now I go to 2nd then up to 1st. And sometimes its very easy to hit reverse. There should be a lock out system. In the Subaru, you need to lift the "lock" under the shifter ball. Its easy to use two finger and lift then shift to R.

That's how my Scion Tc was, had a little lifter under the shifter head that you pulled up on to get it into reverse. Embarrassingly, I wasn't familiar with this when I bought it so the first week I had it, anytime I needed to reverse from my house to go the other direction I would pull up into the neighbor's driveway and roll backward in neutral and then go, haha. I eventually figured it out.

x2. The lockout on the taco is perfect. Zero complaints here.

Safer than hitting reverse or 1st when you mean for the other.

I like the VW one better, you had to push down on the shifter to hit R. That would suck for rocking back and forth, the lift is easier for that.

Now that I go to 2nd before 1st, I have no issues, but for a new manual trans driver, the taco is a bad system

Sorry, but going 2nd to Reverse is just some muscle memory that needs some time to develop. I tend to fidget with lockouts, so it is more like to be engaged when I am shifting. You can't really fidget with the spring.
