Just a question from someone here in Illinois. I see lots of Tacoma around...more all the time it seems. I have not seen a single one with a rooftop or bed-mounted tent setup like a lot of y'all have. To me, it seems they are quite expensive compared to a traditional tent. And it seems setup is not THAT much easier. What is the draw to have them vs traditional setups??? Are bears the issue out there? I don't get it but help me understand...

 

They never had tree houses like we did growing up in southern Illinois. LOL!

I plan on doing it mainly for winter camping. Having a lot of snow on the ground makes it a pain.

 

For me . . . it puts me up off the ground. Camping in the desert and elsewhere it lessens the likelihood of scorpions, snakes and other critters getting into the tent. Less of a mess inside the tent with a vestibule, etc. Don't have to dig a trench around the tent to divert ground water, worry about bending stakes trying to drive them in and the dirt associated with them afterwards, or worry about tripping over guide ropes and tent poles at night. I would say for a true set up of a tent, staking, trenching, finding a level spot, etc. that goes with a ground tent, my iKamper X-cover sets up and breaks down quicker than my ground tents. Some RTT are more cumbersome than others to set up and take down. I still have my singleton and three man tents and use them when I go hiking or use as an extra bedroom for someone else if they want their own quarters.

 

Used a ground tent for about the first two years I had my taco (including a winter trip into far NW Maine), plus backpacking trips here and there before the truck. For me it comes down to setup. By which I mean site prep.. If I can level the truck, my bed is level. No rocks, roots, sticks, or sloping grade to worry about. I wont lie though, time-wise the act of setting up / taking down the RTT is probably about the same as my small ground tent if you factor in opening the windows and all that. Another plus is cargo space, tent is permanently mounted to the truck, so its not taking up space somewhere in the truck anymore.

New England doesnt really have poisonous shit like snakes / scorpions ect, so thats not a big concern for me. But I will say it is still nice to be up off the ground

 

I think it's easier to set up (my wife can do it by herself and she's 5'2"). It's also hella more comfortable, off the (potentially) wet ground, saves space, and offers the idea of protection from seemingly nonexistent bears/mountain lions/etc. -- but they're nimble and agile... sooooo...

I do enjoy folding up my bedding with the tent and not worrying about it. It does suck if you need/want to drive somewhere, but it's a mild inconvenience to the benefits.

I'd still be ground tent camping if I didn't come across this one new-in-box for a steal of a deal.

 

OK. Thanks for the answers. I see a lot of points in what you all are saying. Like one poster said, you don't have to worry about bears, mountain lions, snakes, scorpions and the like here in the Midwest. But I get the weather part, too. I have woke up with torrential downpours happening and with what seemed like a river running thru my tent...all my bedding soaked. Made for a MISERABLE night! Maybe if I find one for a steal, I may try and snag one, lol...

 

I do like the idea of the small all-terrain looking trailers where the tent mounts to it rather than the truck. That way in case you DID wanna drive somewhere you wouldn't have to pack up camp to do it. I've seen several of them in this post, too.

 

I'll probably get rid of my current ground tent and go back to rebuilding my backpacking setup. In a pinch, I could just use that.
