Rigd ultra swing .....hitch mounted swingout tire carrier

As a user who almost always has a bike rack on my truck, this product is a complete failure. The secondary hitch mount on the swingout is way off-center and forces most users bikes way into the driver side. The only bike rack that could compensate for this is the 1up, which a lot of people don't have.

They seem to have removed the photo from their website that illustrates this very clearly, which leads me to believe they are being deceptive about it rather than address the problem.

Which bike rack is that? I have Used several racks with the regular hitch straight down center and it still has the front tire a few i lnches Out on whichever side you put it.
Works fine for daily use and around town but i agree That could catch off road on trees and other objects.

Anybody with any other racks have issues?

I have been looking at the one up rack buts that another $500 or so unless i find It used. Solid construction though from what i have Read and seen in person.

Also looking at the Thule tire mounted rack like on a lot of jeep setups. Seems to get the bikes up and out of the way for decent departure angles but still hold them more center line of truck.

No idea, I can't keep track of all the heavy/cheap/"affordable"/Kickstarter/disposable-when-rusted-and-broken bike racks these days since Kuat came onto the market ~10 years ago.

I've had a 1up for years and will never go back. The only change I will make in the future is either bikes in the truck bed protected under the shell OR buying the roof rack or van 1UP parts and making a custom swingout with those to get perfect height & spacing.

Yep, they are "overpriced" for most people, yet they will spend $2k on a light bar that they will use 1% of the time, whereas a solid bike rack will protect your expensive bike all the time. This morning I watched a Sprinter drive by dragging an expensive MTB sideways on the road because the rear wheel popped off the rack...

Also, they almost never go on the used market because they are pretty much a lifetime rack - they last forever. Also owners don't have the desire to upgrade/replace it like the cheaper racks that suck for whatever reason.

Sure, it packs down small and seems great, but it's not solid. If you drive off road, your bike will be swinging and slapping the other bikes and the spare tire. Also, from dust/dirt/mud/sand, the way that it attached will wear through your paint/carbon pretty damn quick.

I like really picking apart products and giving the negatives that people don't usually think about.

i actually fit my 2 bike rack in the regular hitch hole but then i can’t use swingout. I did notice the bike sitting either hard driver or passenger depending but didn’t seem more than before in regular hitch position.

I might Have to go back and measure for comparison. I’m definitely leaning tray style and saw a black oneup this weekend on a similar Tacoma as mine and it seems perfect for my application.

I don’t run the tire all the time so if they had some sort of attachment to the current Tire mount, bikes could go there and sit up higher and still swing out. Maybe @ragofabrication could work something up.

Typically if I’m off-roading im not taking bikes unless I’m getting to a trail that requires it but most of my current trails in DC area are urban roads so just gotta watch out for asshole drivers and other bikers not to clip them in the bike lane.

I have Seen a few sweet setups with a oneup sitting higher on a full swingout bumper but still Can’t justify that weight and use. Maybe i need To contact a solid company and have a custom one built.

honestly rigd and/or oneup should team up and create a perfect combo or attachment options that centers that hitch better and accommodates 2-4 bikes. Probably not gonna happen but it seems they are teaming with other quality companies on certain products.

Oh well meets my current needs the best out of all options. But this is why i appreciate The constructive criticism as it helps competition and drives improvement. Hopefully for the better of us consumers.

Got the measurements I needed thanks. I've figured out some other options to mount recovery gear I wanted without using the Ultraswing. Thanks for the pic of the bike rack, I knew the second hitch was offset but that seems like a lot.

 

Here's how I run on solo road trips - single bike 1up. Never had issues with clearance (width or ground) running Colorado passes or trails.

How stable is that “anti-wobble” feature that it has? I’m mostly pre-running fast on the dessert. Small baby whops and some baby jumps lol. I need an option for the time being for my spare tire. Any info would help thanks!

Sorry just saw this been busy as hell with work and moving back across country. I personally don't do desert and whoops right now so cannot give advice but from what I have seen (videos/reviews and online forums) these will hold up pretty well. Just make sure to check the wedge and mount before and after if needed to tighten. As anything going through that much torque and sway it can fail. baby whoops it should be fine as they use it similarly on their T4R. Jumps could be a completely different thing though and im sure they don't recommend jumping with a bike in tow but I would give them a call and see.

 

Hey man saw your post in 3rd gen section. Still completely satisfied with my purchase and the product. Depending on your application I would recommend the table/cutting board and molle mount over rotopax. I didn't realize until after a few more trips now I would use it more than the gas. It is way more functional for my needs. YMMV.

After a few more trips I am now looking at getting a HC rear bumper and running this instead of dual swing out arms. Most of the time I don't need the swingout arms and the ability to remove this or set it up the way I need for trips is awesome. Still deciding but leaning in that direction. Let me know if you have specific questions.

 

Thanks. Im waiting on a reply to if i need the molle mount for the table. I can put the rotopax, if i ever get them, on the roof or bed rack. Thanks man it is definitely coming together finally. Love working on it and learning as I go. From what I understand you need the molle panel to attach the table and cutting board. I saw them at Overland Expo East at Rigd booth on @overlandkentucky 4runner and they seemed way more functional.

I actually recommend the scepter cans if you can find them. I have used them all over the desert in the military. I will use those for longer trips. The rotopax is just convenient and easy for my current application and quick trips to the mountains.

 

Got my Ultraswing last week and have spent the week trouble shooting all the little complications adding one of these carriers presents. Wiring the carrier to move your camera and to move light to license plate means that although you can easily remove the carrier from the hitch, it’s now wired to your truck. Not desirable. So i made some choices to make it possible to disconnect both.

First order was install, pretty straight forward.

Next I procured a new reverse camera. I know some guys just love the one in their tailgate but I didn’t want a hole there so I bought a separate one. So when I opened up my tailgate all I had to do was unplug the wiring harness and feed it under the truck. Sanded down a protruding leg on one of the bolt holes to flat and drilled a hole in the license plate e frame and bolted it on.

Next I ordered a license plate light bracket from OffRoadOnly. Picked up a metal license plate frame from the local auto parts store to add some rigidity. Bolted the light bracket to the back of the frame and the plate so it’s super sturdy.

With the light now moved out to the carrier, I removed the bulbs from the factory license plate lights. Then I cut the wires on the right side light and wired the new light to its power source. Easy enough. Then removed the clear lens from the right side license plate light housing and ran both wires wrapped through the opening and along the back of the carrier so it’s not an eye sore.

The ability to detach all the wiring easily was important to me if I ever wanted to remove the carrier. So the light has a quick disconnect and the camera can just unplug from the harness. Then just snip two zip ties and it’s free.

I see you have the ultraswing with a bed cap, can the tire be positioned on the ultraswing so that the rear glass of the cap be opened without having to swing out the ultraswing?

 

Hey all! I have an Ultraswing and I love it! I am deciding to sell it though due to the fact that I never bring more than one bike with me. If you live in the Denver area hit me up. I’m willing to sell for 1,300 with a bunch of extras!

I’ve used this this all summer. I’ve been to some crazy places almost every weekend including Black Bear Pass. I’ve never hit anything with it. Not a scratch!
