Break Override Malfunction

My truck has been down for almost two weeks. I got a break override malfunction warning light out of no where and the truck kind of felt like as if the battery was going to die and the error came up but went right away. Fast forward 2-3 hours I go back out to start it and it wont crank over and the error comes up, brake override malfunction contact dealer. It took a week just to get it to the dealership and after it being there for 2 days I go in and try to get the results because I havent heard back. Well they are so backed up and all I could get was a repair quote from them. They kept saying they can bypass the relay and it will be good for a temporary fix in the meantime but 2 days later they finally call me on Saturday to pick up the truck and tell me 3 hours before close that they were unable to get it to where it can drive and if I want to come get it it needs to be towed out today otherwise come Monday to settle the bill for the diagnostic.

They quoted me 3,900 for the part and about 1,200 for the labor. At this point I don't even know what to do. This is what they left me with. Where do I go from here?

 

34k miles? I'd get in touch with Toyota corporate and see if they'll help you out.

You do any electrical mods?

 

I honestly dont know why they have that mileage. The actual mileage is 40,648.

Nope. Nothing that I have done myself under the hood. I plan on calling Monday since its Saturday and I am unable to do anything today.

 

Did you buy the truck new? The tech. is eluding to the fact that the connectors to the engine control module have been messed with and the connectors are broken. They are also saying that there are things wrong with the fuse block. Do you have any records of the dealer performing any electrical work?

 

My first step would be to find a wiring diagram and have a look at what they're talking about. It almost sounds to me as if there was some sort of security system installed and then removed but not put back the way it should have. It could be as simple as a bad connection or loose wire.

 

Wonder how much the box and harness cost, and how much labor is really involved.

I was quoted $800 at my dealership for Camry purge valve and install. I picked up an OEM valve for $26 bucks shipped and the install was under four minutes from the time I popped the hood.
Most service departments are run like a den of thieves.

 

I am the second Owner of the vehicle and I have not personally installed anything under the hood or have had any work dont to the truck besides scheduled maintenance. The previous owners could have had something but they were an older couple. So maybe they had some sort of security system I just wish I knew.

Oof. What bothers me is they want to charge $3900 for parts. It says wiring harness and fuse box, which is only mildly specific. Did they give an itemized list? Preferably with part numbers?

If they're wanting to replace a whole wiring harness I can kind of understand that, dealers aren't in the business of repairing them. It's much easier to just throw a new perfect one in than try to work out what's wrong.

So, the tech could not communicate with the ECM, via techstream, directly through the EFI relay, and they want to replace the fuse box? You need a better tech to troubleshoot. Really. Find a highly regarded shop in your area. This has 2nd option written all over it.

 

Okay so I have been waiting to reply because I needed to get my truck back. So as of today I had my neighbor who is a mechanic look at it. Turns out the connector to the relay fuse was disconnected. He connected and we thought that had solved the problem.

The truck now turns on and all error has gone away and the truck now starts. I turn it off and turn it back on just in case and its cranking but is still having trouble turning over but it does. So he changes the battery out and we turn it on and it turn over and starts. I take it for a test drive but it feels as if it is in limp mode. Its idling funny and it can not go over about 10 MPH and feels as if its going to die unless you let off the gas. Sooooo after that another error message came up for charging system and another one about low transmission something. Tested a few relays and checked the voltage on alternator and everything seems fine. No more error codes are popping up but now its not staying on and pretty much just dying out.

I went ahead and ordered a generic version for tech stream on Amazon and we're going go go that route and see. It should be here Friday and hopefully that will tell us more and also come in handy for the future instead of running it to the dealership.

Sounds like you bought a used vehicle that had some mods that went wrong. Hope your mechanic can fix it for a good price. Have him put it back stock for max reliability and durability. Good luck!

 

Honestly, its Hawaii and they will try to rip you off every way they can here. Servco is honestly trash and they are a total scam. I hate that when I call Toyota it automatically redirects me to SERVCO because they are in my region. Also probably because I am a female and think I dont know any better. After going back and forth with them about the amount they tried to charge me for the diagnostic I only ended up paying the $146 instead of the $ 275 they gave me. Once I went to pik up the vehicle and got the final outcome it was basically the same thing. I asked why I had not gotten the specific parts they said I needed since I was quoted so much. I wanted to know the exact parts with the numbers as I have gotten previously form them when I took the truck in for an A/C problem and also so I could look them up myself. Well the sales rep wasnt in and it was his day off so the manger of course could not tell me why and didnt know much since the guy wasnt in. I told them I wanted those parts and I will be going back tomorrow for them.

 

The diag is sound. What is being said is that a terminal pin has been pulled out and will not hold in whatever connector. The connector must be attached or in the fuse block. A lot of the time it may be the entire harness they want to replace and that does come with the fuse block.

What OP needs to know is how the tech determines that the wiring has been modified and whether the "modified" portion is related to the problem in the circuit that is at fault for the concern you brought it in for. if the modified portion has nothing to do with the vehicle not running then your in the clear. You need to get Toyota head office involved now and convince them that there is not concrete evidence showing it was modified and that the issues found could have easily been caused at the factory.

Also do a check to see if a toyota dealer had performed and wiring repairs previously.

BTW I previously wrenched for a toyota dealer, not just shooting my mouth off.

 

Is this a cpk issue? I'm not that knowledgeable on em. I thought brake over ride malfunction was "common" on these? Isn't there a tsb?
