My buddy has a 2002 F250 single cab long bed that is a manual transmission. It says the gear pattern is Creeper-1-2-3-4-overdrive. It's like they needed to tell people it had four on the floor. The shifter itself was like 5 feet long. Whenever we went people thought we were "the help". We went to a place to buy mulch one time and before we knew it a worker dumped 3 yards of mulch into the bed by accident. He just figured we were there from this golf course that had similar trucks.

I installed the URD short shifter on my truck. That definitely increased the effort required to engage reverse, but even before that I never found reverse accidentally. I drove a 2005 Corolla XRS for 8 years prior to my Tacoma with the 6 speed, that had zero tension and reverse was easier to find than first. Toyota's answer to that was a beeper in reverse of the back of the instrument cluster. I always felt some sort of locking mechanism would have been safer.

I have yet to find reverse by accident but I have less than 1500 miles on it. Does it loosen up over time? If it doesn't I feel like you'd have to be Superman not paying attention to get R instead of 1.

on my truck anyway if you go back in forth in neutral a couple times it will go right into reverse when you come across.

if you just pull straight over from neutral, you'll hit the lockout and go up to first.

I am on my 3rd Tacoma in 11 years with that shift pattern and never accidently went in Reverse, the gate on all 3 trucks has quite a bit of resistance to pass thru.

It’s interesting you say this, at times I feel like there is a steel wall there, and others I wonder if there is anything there. Never done a scientific experiment or even payed enough attention to care.

I find myself needing to go back to 1st gear when I'm around 10-15 mph in order to get the truck out of its own way. Does anyone else find this to be true too?

It's difficult to get back into 1st, for any vehicle, but I would double clutch/rev match. Sometimes it slides right in, but other times there's clatter/rattle(not a crunch sound) as if the gears meshed directly without a synchro.

I’ve found my truck doesn’t like to go into first at those speeds. I’m not comfortable forcing it into gear.
After 20k miles I’ve learned to work around it.

I have no problem getting it by 20mph. It is a triple set of syncros, so they take some time to break in. Redline MT90 also helps.

it took a few months of break in, a few months of practicing aim, and i think i have some Royal Purple in there that helps too. but the main two things for me are rev matching and throttle control. which. means ADM & OVT.

Right on! The ADM was necessary for it to feel right and be smooth after the gear was notched in.

Did you sometimes get a clatter if you get the rev match slightly off ( I want to say it does this only when I over shoot the rpm rather than under)?

well i can make the clutch chatter in most temps at will just by taking it to the bite point. is that what you mean, clutch chatter? if that's your symptom I'm suggesting the ADM for better clutch modulation feel. if the 'clatter' you refer to is a metallic clunk sound when you punch down the clutch pedal, then that's normal on our trucks when you hit that pedal quickly. just not really sure what you're referring to: clatter.

The clatter I’m referring to is when slotting it into 1st from a double clutch/rev match. It’s from the gears meshing.
