I am about to purchase 2013 Sport Tacoma for my 16 y/o’s first vehicle. I’m sure he will be stoked (it’s a surprise), but I’m nervous. Anything I should consider about this particular year/model for him? Thank you!!

I have a 2013 and have not run into any serious issues with it. It will have the back up cam screen in the rear view mirror and not on the radio which i love! They do not have GPS as far as i know, and you get the 4.0 V6.

I hope you know how to work on these Tacoma's. If your son is like mine he will push that truck and see what it can and can't do. Go ahead and get him a long pull strap so he can call his buddy to pull him out instead of calling you in the middle of the night. Been there ! My boy would ride creeks with water almost coming in the truck cab and eventually it ruined the front brake calipers and washed all the grease out of the CV Axle's and had to replace those to. O yea and it's a pain replacing the four U Joints after they have been washed clean of grease and some of the bearings have already fell out. Its a good thing I know how to work on these trucks and he bought the parts I didn't. Finally we agreed that its ok to have fun with the truck just let me know when you do these things so we can do some maintenance on it after. Grease everything. Anyway these are great trucks and he will love it I promise you. Yall can spend time modding it together. Good job Mom.

Thanks for the replies. Someone just showed me a 2015 xsp-x priced less, more miles, nonsport. The ride felt wobbly, with not much pick up. Is the ride of the 2015 sport solid & good for highway driving too?

Suspensions vary a lot on Tacoma’s. You could have 10 Tacoma’s and get 10 different feeling rides. The factory suspensions vary from model to model and then you have all of the aftermarket components that people put on their trucks. Find a truck that you like and I would highly recommend having a trusted mechanic look it over. Tacoma’s, as well as most Toyota’s are pretty much bulletproof. The biggest downfall with Tacoma’s is frame rust. I’ve had 4 Tacoma’s and mechanically I’ve had no issues with any of them. I did have a 2000 Tacoma that Toyota bought back because of frame rust. Overall the Tacoma is a great truck that has so many aftermarket mods available to help make it look the way you want.

The 2013 model is a 2nd gen Tacoma. You have made a great choice and are putting your son on the path to righteousness! A wobbly ride could be a number of things, but most likely the tires. The 4.0 v6 and the 2.7 4 cylinder are both bulletproof engines with regular maintenance.
