The Unofficial "Official" Spotted Lanternfly Thread

My area (Where I live, where I work, and where I generally hang out) is currently a quarantine zone because of these little bastards. The infestation started in Berks County a few years ago, but only recently have they started showing up in Central Bucks.

Pesticides are being used to deal with the lantern flies, and everyday people like me have been told to simply kill them on sight, which I gladly do.

Has anyone in Maryland or Virginia encountered these pests?

Is there anything on Virginia’s Department of Agriculture website?

 

Not a clue, I've never really looked into it

 

These bugs are native to Asia. I forget whether they were brought here by mistake or purposely introduced to deal with another invasive species...

 

Like many things, including radioactive isotopes from Japan, these were most likely carried here by high altitude trade winds.

 

I heard they got here in some rock delivery from Asia to some mason company

This comes after Emerald Ash Borers killed every Ash tree around here in 6 years.

 

Im getting really tired of the gypsy moths, the killed a dozen or more giant oak trees in my yard over the past 3 years.

 

And those have been almost non-existent in this end of the state. We had it bad in the 70's. Go figure.

Trade winds didn't bring them here
They hitched a ride like most insects do.


Apparently that was a waist of money, like usaul
Apparently they like to jump more than fly but they can fly.
Just keep them down there please, I already have enough insects to deal with

A Bug-A-Salt, an electronic handheld swatter/zapper, or a magnifying glass on a sunny day, is more fun!

No joke I have literally taken a propane torch to every gypsy moth best I could find....
10 hours later didn't do a dam thing

 

One time my dad used gasoline and a match to get rid of an ant infestation at our old house...

Actually worked pretty good!
