These are always for sale

So I've been online a lot of the last year or so always looking for Tacoma parts. And one thing I've noticed is, King shocks and Methods wheels are ALWAYS being sold by someone..

What gives? Why are people always selling King shocks and Methods if they are so good?

I know Kings are great, so why is it that each day I see constant new post on different sites for people getting rid of them. I dont get it.

Same with methods, people swear by them. "Off road race wheels blah blah" so why so many ads.

Just ranting from curiosity.

Most only want that IG pic of unboxing Kings. Then they don't need it.

I mean they are easier to buy than install for some.

 

I think people buy them and don't realize long term considerations in terms of maintenance. Parts for King shocks are expensive (wiper caps $150, Rod ends $60, rebuilds ~$100 each) and if you can't rebuild them in your garage then rebuilding them can be pricey. Not to mention there are plenty of people who can't or won't wrench on their own trucks so paying to install them + removal for maintenance + rebuilding + reinstallation = $$$$. That makes it so people start to reconsider their king shock purchases.

As an above post mentioned, too many people buy into the instagram hype that they MUST have these shocks even though they don't know anything (including wrenching on their own vehicle) and so they don't consider long term expenses or hassles. Or they sometimes buy all the stuff needed for a shock relocation without realizing how much work it will actually need or without realizing how much a shop will charge for installation.

Or they can be like me, I'm selling my rear king shocks because I already have everything needed to do an Archive shock relocation. The itch for more performance continues for me.

 

This makes a lot of sense. Especially for the shocks I see that have miles on them. But I'm seeing a trend of "rebuilt" king shocks going on for sale. Unless of course they are lying and haven't done the rebuild.

 

And then I see a lot of people posting "going a different route with the build". And it's like, what other shock would you possibly be using. I'm not saying king is the absolute best, but they are up there. And then you check months later and that same person selling the Kings has done nothing on the truck

 

I'm sure there are liars out there but for the most part I think it goes back to what I stated earlier about people not knowing anything about King shocks or rebuilding them. My set of King shocks have been for sale for a while without being rebuilt and they haven't moved a bit (I should go lower in price though), the ones with proof of being rebuilt on the other hand do sell. From the inquiries I have gotten for my shocks it seems that nobody really knows anything about them (keep getting messages about what it takes to rebuild them, if I can rebuild them before sale, if they fit a Chevy Colorado, what the shocks even provide in terms of performance, etc.) and so trying to figure out how to rebuild them, finding a shop to rebuild them, or doing legwork as a buyer is just too much work. There's a trend in modifications these days of "bolt-on" friendly because it takes any critical thinking or skill out of the equation.

Just swipe credit card, hand them off to a shop for installation, swipe credit card again, and boom you have King shocks ready for Instagram glory.

After a while, the giddiness of bling and peacocking wears off and when they start leaking then reality sinks in. If you read through the "3rd gen owners with Kings" thread you'll see a few posts about what I'm talking about.

Another good example of this is Ben from Filthy Motorsports made a video where he talked about performance suspension. In the video he talks about how people will call and ask for a King Shock setup. He will inquire about what the vehicle is going to be used for, what performance is desired, what the budget is, how often it will be offroaded, the terrain it will be on, etc. After this questionnaire he will actually tell the caller that the King shocks are overkill or unnecessary and try to point them in a different direction. Sometimes they will heed his advice, but sometimes they insist on having reservoirs, King stickers, and the flashy bling under their trucks.

solid dude, and his rebuilds are affordable and a good deal. Been thinking of getting the shocks I'm selling rebuilt by him so they can sell quicker. I rebuilt the 12" shocks I have now but I don't think people would be too enthused to purchase rebuilt shocks by an amateur garage hack like myself lol

 

That's why I have a new thrown down set still in the box in case issues arise. Oh and I have zero debt to top it off.

 

Very true. I'm proud to say that every single thing done to my truck since purchase (except for the steering rack) has been done in my driveway. And I went with Bilstein 6112 because I just dont hit the trails as much as I used to. Although kings sound great, here in NYC, I'd never get to use them to their potential.

 

But what about the method wheels... why are those always for sale from people who used them for a short time?

 

Most buy those and then find out that scs makes a wheel. Most don't care for the center cap.

 

I think part of the problem too is King themselves. They dont publish shit for data on the 'OEM' shocks.. The only travel numbers Ive been able to find (reliably) for 25001-121-ext and 25001-144 has been a PM from Marie. Honestly Kings website flat out sucks, so it doesnt really surprise me some people dont really know what they are getting

 

Getting parts, like shims and such have also been a issue.

 

Like @JaCado said, people are very finicky when it comes to wheels. They'll purchase wheels, then find new options that they like more, or they want to go bigger in tire size, or different backspacing, etc.

@Rob Daman is a good example of always finding different deals on wheels and switching them out constantly. Wheels provide both performance and visual appeal. Not to mention usually sell complete wheel and tire sets at a good price.

It's just the territory that comes with being a Tacoma enthusiast, there are so many options and paths to take with Tacomas that it's easy to switch and change opinions and ideas. Wheels are just one of those options.
