I would sure like to know what's the percent is of the people actually go off road with the Tacoma. Not just fire trails I'm talking about rock climbing. Has anyone ever had a situation where something broke and Toyota wouldn't cover it because they went off-road with the truck?

Pings here too on downshift with high engine load.
This is due to ecu logic to hold higher gear.
    Stock,TSB, 1.05, 1.05.1 on 87/92 all have this

I have a 2011 4.0 auto trany and I noticed lately mine has been doing this. Mainly when shifting from 3 to 4 and mainly when it's warmer. I also use Chevron but just use regular unleaded. Seams to be getting more frequent. Not sure what to do?.?. Though of switching fuel companies or even trying 92 octane. Will that help and dos the pinging hurt the engine? Truck only has 43000 miles. Any help would be appreciated!

Mine used to ping pretty hard off the line until I switched to 91 (E10). Completely fixed it. I’m at sea level fwiw, 6MT.

OP, have you tried disconnecting your battery to reset the ecu?

I ping, slow rolls in throttle. Never with the turbo button engaged. Its a consequence of these ultra tight mpg and emissions standards. They tune cars for the test parameters, not driving.

ive had multiple cars that have pinged but its starts at 150k miles or more except for my subaru. 94 Ford explorer with 4.0 OHV sold with 260k miles started pinging at 180k , 01 Xterra 3.3l OHC traded with 236k miles started pinging at around 150, 12 Subaru 2.0na pinged from the beginning 0 miles with and without a tune.

As much as i wish i could tell you that higher octane will fix it.... its just a bandaid eventually that will ping.

so far i havent heard any pinging from my Tacoma but im only 2800 in. Ill take my dads 07 tacoma w/100k on it for a test drive and see if i can tell if he has any next time i visit.

upon acceleration is when i hear it and it sounds like little steel bb's jumping around in the dash. there should be no "feel" to it

If your engine pings, and is answered with a corresponding ack a few milliseconds later, then your engine has successfuly communicated with SkyNet and provided your coordinates.

Remain where you are and await termination.

Unless you're talking about that soft clacking noise that sounds like lifters. That's something else.

I have to ask: is it possible there are BBs rattling around in your dash?

This sounds like something is loose somewhere...in front of you.

Is it certain that the sound is coming from the valve train or is it in the lower block?

Under high rpm/load I get what feels like a miss or hesitation. Pinging or something else?

Mine does it (pings). Way less often on high octane. I’d recommend changing your gas station and seeing if that helps. I picked up some bad gas once and it was terrible. Pretty rare with high octane/ quality fuel.

You're describing engine knock. Impossible to know w/o hearing it first-person.

I'm unsure why you would experience knock while I don't. We're running identical code to map a/f mix and timing. I'd check the ECU for yarped codes or take it in if it's still under 60k powertrain warranty. Maybe your sensors are cooked, or the sensor wires are mouse poop.
