Question... have you taken it out and absolutely flogged the shit out of it yet? Believe it or not, if you want rated performance, that is what you do. And... best part... it was designed to do it! Take it up to 5K. Use the S mode to tach it up. You will be surprised! If you drive like grandma, shifting at 1800, it will drive exactly like you describe. Wake it up and it is a different truck.
I put 40K on my Tacoma last year and I drove it every day like that. Was a joy to drive.

I felt the same way UNTIL I got the TSB done. It’s a great truck now. No more hunting gears and holds the gears as it should.

    If you’re the impressionable sort.

My ‘17 Tacoma is a refreshed version of my ‘01, which I still love. So it’s as if Toyota read my mind, and built me something even more better. It’s fucking fantastic.

I think I had to learn how much to push the gas pedal at different rpms. Just drive it for a couple of months. It is never going to be a race car but it is almost as fast as the Tundra.

    I'm happy, OP.

Therefore, anyone with half a brain and one m/l functional nut should be happy, too.

Do the SR5s have the ECT button?

    If yes: Push that. Go.
If no: keep driving and you'll probably get used to its quirks. Learn the s mode. Give it a little more time before bailing, it's still kind of learning your driving style. Not sure the approximate time or miles... maybe a month/couple thousand miles?

I came from a car, so this is my first truck so I didn't notice much out of what truck owners call ordinary. I have no idea if mine is hunting gears... it goes when I push the gas, sometimes it shifts when it needs a new gear, but I don't feel like it's doign that so frequently to notice it.

Well, that button makes a big difference in city driving. Doesn’t do shit above 55mph. The transmission sucks above 70mph if you want to use cruise. Waiting to see if the more expensive 2020 fixes this.

I find cruise control to be terrible in this regardless of speed (maybe it's good at 3 mph... no idea).
