How can I stop my digital speed display from switching back and forth?

When I'm using radar cruise control in my new 2019 Tacoma I like to monitor my speed and distance to empty on the center digital display, but it keeps switching between that and the following distance / lane change display as shown in the images below. Is there a way to stop it from switching and keep it on speed / distance to empty?

That screen lasts a few seconds. Or just hit the back arrow on the wheel and it will go away

 

Trade for a 2016 or 2017 lol.

 

That display is telling you when it makes/loses contact with the vehicle in front. My wife's Subaru chimes when it happens and it drives me nuts. I agree that the notification is unnecessary and the screen shouldn't change. Who cares if you make/lose contact, the CC has been set and leave it at that.

 

I was hoping that there was some sort of computer hack to fix that.

I really hate it when any sort of computer-controlled display changes by itself while you're trying to read it. We see it on web pages that suddenly pop something up that gets in your way while your trying to read an article, and billboards that change ads before you get close enough to read something that caught your interest. I don't want my own truck doing that to me too!

 

I would love to get rid of that thing as well. Its the type of idea that looks good on paper, but is impractical in real world.

Seriously, when I look at my cruise control setting and compare it to my speed, I can determine whether the car in front of me is slowing me down, and if so, by how much. That helps me decide whether it's worthwhile to change lanes and pass or just stay behind that car. The problem is that half of the time I glace down to read those numbers they're not there, and often when they come back the opening to pass that I had is gone.

 

I feel ya OP....following in case somebody has a fix.

 

There is a setting on the last panel of that screen to turn off pop up display. That should prevent it.

 

I double checked, I absolutely don't have this option.

 

If that is distracting for you, try to operate one of those...

 

It's not distracting, just annoying and poor UI programming.

 

My Taco has a speedo and a gas gauge.

 

How about the warning that lane departure thingy doesnt work below 32mph... yeah, I get it, stop telling me that it doesnt work, i dont care anymore that it doesnt work below 32mph

 

I turned that one off, can't recall a time in my life where I wasn't aware that I was departing the lane.

 

I used to say that too.

It alerts me more times than necessary for sure, but once it caught me truly drifting because I wasn’t paying enough attention.

 

I'll admit, I had to change my entire cruise control strategy with the new adaptive cruise system. But honestly, I don't sit there crunching numbers on speed differences. My eyes are good enough to see a speed difference between the car ahead, which contributes to my decision to change lanes or pass.

Here's the strategy I generally use: On single-lane highways, I use 3-bar distance, and pretty much set it and forget it. Unless the car in front is going egregiousy slow, I stay where I'm at. On multiple lane freeways, I use 1-bar distance so I have minimal brake input from the system when approaching a slower vehicle in my lane. For instance, 70mph speed limit but semi's going 60mph, I know I need to change lanes before radar cruise reacts to the truck.

Don't worry about the pop up, pay attention to the road!
