Got a few dents on my tailgate, small enough to live with, but it got me thinking if there are any custom tailgates available out there. I’m thinking similar to, although not necessarily exactly like, the ones in the attached picture, that open down.

Searched the google and all over the forum and saw only one custom fabbed swingout gate that sold a couple years ago.

Anybody know any any custom gates? Thanks

Is this just an appearance thing? I think I would vote for just repairing the stock one as far as looks, fit, and appearance. I don't think those vented style tail gates offer any advantage in fuel economy. They may even cause additional drag.

Yes, an appearance thing but also a functional thing. I imagine a burly gauged steel tube gate that can take a little banging around and not dent so easily as the oem gate.

I haul wood sometimes and have a rack to protect my rear windows and would like a gate that can handle a little banging around from logs, rocks, etc.

I don’t mind the dents for now, and will get them fixed eventually, just think it’d be neat to have a custom gate. Our trucks have steel plate bumpers, and other armor, why not a steel tailgate? Shower thoughts.

    It's so funny,
I get so caught up in the looks, mods, and have fun with my truck, I forget about all the guys and women that use their trucks as trucks. I dig that rack

Thanks. As nice as my Tacoma is I can’t help but see it’s utility as a regular ol work truck. Maybe it’s because I grew up with working trucks, all fords, that got banged around. Still got a ranger that is a solid work truck. I got a Tacoma to be my ‘nice’ truck but I still end up using it to haul wood, garbage, crops, etc. It cleans up pretty nicely when I want to take it for a cruise in town though.

A buddy of mine made it custom for my Tacoma. Bolts into the rail, no drilling. It’s saved my back window once so far, so already worth it. Don’t see many Tacoma’s out there sporting racks.

That is an awesome rack. I dont know of anyone making a tailgate. But if your buddy built that??? Get him to build a tailgate to match and have an awesome one of a kind rig! Or two off after he sells me one too.

Your going the wrong direction I think. If you want to look badass and really turn heads, go with an old school mural:
