Wow! 7,000 lbs? I thought mine is a pig at 6,500 lbs completely empty. What kind of mileage are you getting? During gear break in driving from Seattle to the southern part of Oregon on I-5 at 60 mph I got only 14.7 mpg

I have 33” tires and just sliders for armor. My 5.29’s do great, 75mph on the freeway at about 2500 rpm. I get better mileage as well.

Interesting, I’m running 32” tires (275/70/17, KO2s) and at 60 mph I’m at 2500 rpm. Prior to regearing, I was doing 2500 rpm at 75 mph

Yeah the manual and auto have different gear rations. I believe there’s a really nice chart in the 5.29 thread.

I have been running 4:56 gears for almost 2 years now and love them. Yukon makes them.

If you are never gonna go larger than 35", 5.29 is a waste. 4.88s are intended for up to 35" tire and is the perfect balance.

If you plan on 37s, then 5.29 is a great choice.

Most people are getting 5.29s and really don't even need it. Id bet few if any do major amounts of highway driving. I live in Texas and the 7+ hours of highway would suck at high rpms, or slow speed.

Currently setup is 4.88s with 34s. Sweet spot

Any taco under 70mph on most any setup will get great MPG. Speed limits here go up to 85 tho

Whats your set up in weight and any additional mods that would affect drag? Currently on 33 KM3, 3" lift, Prinsu, high clearance rear bumper w/ swing out, sliders, skids and prior to OVTune 2.0 I averaging 15 mpg @ 75 mph. Ran a trip from Houston to Baton Rouge Monday with 2.0 and was getting 17.5 mpg @ 75-80 mph. Gulf coast driving really sucks bc traffic travels 75 - 85 mph and you are usually driving into or cross winds of 10+ mph. I plan on running 35" in the next couple of months I was thinking 5.29 but you would recommend 4.88?

Edit: My mileage of 17.5 mpg is based on moderate traffic being mindful to draft behind other vehicles. I hate when people post ridiculous MPG numbers bc yes I can also get 20+ mpg @ 65 mph drafting behind full size trucks and semi's on the Houston toll road traffic all day.

Pretty sure this is the first time I've ever seen someone say to go with 4.88s over 5.29s. Nearly everyone with 4.88s wishes they went to 5.29s (aside from people on stock tires) and I've never seen someone with 5.29s wish they went 4.88s

Nitro Gears recommends 5.29 gears for the 2016 and up Tacomas on 33" tires you should check there videos on gearing this specific truck! With 2 overdrive gears 5.29 gears are better suited for this Transmission. But it also has a lot to do with how you drive and how you want the truck to perform. The videos explain it really well.

Yup! Fully loaded for camp I get anywhere from 12-14 mpg. If I add a 2k offroad trailer, my mpgs drop to 8-10 mpgs.

That's going to be a hard choice. We live in Katy, my wife's truck runs 33s and 4.88s with the beta 2.0. But we don't really have any added weight other than rocker guards. Her truck does well around town, and much better than it used to on the freeway and open road, but like I said, we haven't started adding weight. I'm not opposed to being slightly over-geared (had 5.13s installed in our Jeep when it was still on 35s) so I kinda wish we had 5.29s, but I won't pay to do it all over again.

Unless you had a problem that was somehow directly attributable to the gears (which is highly unlikely), you'd be fine. We had the gear swap done in my wife's truck with ~5,000 miles on the clock.

Ive got the GFC, 3 skids, sliders, front/rear bumper, winch, etc etc etc. All steel and so heavy. Running 285/75/17 E rated ko2s. I was getting low 14s before the 2.0 4.88 tune, and low 15s now with the 2.0 4.88 tune.

There is no chance for my truck to ever even get 35's let alone anything larger, so it just doesnt make sense to have 5.29s. The increased highway RPMs and subsequent lower MPGs, is just not worth it to me.

Your highway RPMs at 75 MPH even with 2 overdrives is going to be closer to 3k with 5.29s... its all you if you want that, but for me, im cruising lower than 2500 RPM @ 75 MPH with 4.88s...

For me, 4.88s are where its at.
