Old Tacoma owner

I just bought a 2019 SR5 crew cab in 2wd. This my 5th Tacoma and couldn't be more pleased with it. From the postings here, I guess I have different expectations of what the truck should do. But then again I don't get excited about the trivial things. Toyota's are all I've owned for the past 20 years. Just don't see any reason to look elsewhere.

Welcome emerson1. Old Tacoma owner here, also. This is my 3rd Tacoma(three 1st gens), 5th Toyota truck starting with the 79 I bought in 1980. And I actually had 10 or so 1st gen company trucks at the company I managed. This is the only one I've been disappointed with, or apprehensive about. Maybe it's that I'm a old codger as my sons call me. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet. But this truck seems way too tech, delicate and prissy to me. I felt I could take my others anywhere in the world. Which I did a lot of while in the military. I drove on 4 continents in my Tacomas. I never thought twice about driving them swamps, deserts and then across country highways. All stock except for BFG AT's. Just open the door on the other side, let water pour out and drive another 200,000 miles. But this new one with all the tech and trons has me wondering where it's going to leave me stranded because of some dropped binary bit in some sensor if I leave a window open. Don't get me wrong, there's not another new truck out there I'd rather have. I guess time and real world exposure will tell after 300k.

This is my first tacoma and it is the best vehicle ive owned. No issues at all so far, quick, not bad on gas and looks great.

I know what you mean OP. I’ve owned several Toyotas as well. An 82, 85, 91, and now a 2016. The 2016 is the first vehicle I’ve bought new. I was going to get an 80 or 100 series LC, but I’d just had a kid and the tipper was, ironically, the techy safety features. I’m still torn as I do get way out there in this truck, where if I were to break down it would be a bad situation. I have several back up comms including a few different ham radio bands and a cb. But when I’m out there, while the tech is comfortable, I’d rather have a stripped down, fully mechanical truck. EFI and anti lock brakes would be the most tech I want.

I do like this truck, but still contemplating picking up something older to build for those very remote travels. I almost imported a diesel FJ. But then, I’ve still got to get to those remote areas via highways.

 

Well, just how old are you?

I had an 1982 (I think) in my early twenties, ,and loved it, annnnddd beat the shit out of it. It would never die, my budy bought it for $500, and it leaked so much oil, and he was so poor, he just asked for other's used oil, to keep it full. It ran like that for another few years, and he sold still running, probably for more than he paid me- shithead was supposed to give me first chance to buy it back, since I did him a favor.
Anyway, all the cool kids here complain about a lack of power have no idea, I used to draft trucks to get that thing over 65-70mph!

 

I had a 1970 Datsun 1600, it was the "big" one with about 95 horsepower, ( there was a 1300). Also I remember no matter how I drove it that Datsun only got 20 mpg. Of course back then that was great compared to everything else.

 

Welcome. You have a fine perspective. You bought a Toyota pickup, and expected a Toyota pickup. And as usual, Toyota delivered. Don’t listen to the nonsense, which is mostly posted by ex-ricers/street racers/Jetta owners who have OCD and cannot sleep without modifying a freaking map light, or people who equate size or power output with quality.

I’m on my 9th Toyota Truck, 8 of those were Tacoma’s (and two 4runners), the reliability speaks volumes. Are they perfect, no, but much better than any alternative I can find.
