Door check anyone?

Anyone have any leads on a front driver side door check? New or used in working condition. Mine is worn out and I’m pretty over my door slamming into my leg. Willing to go the dealership route if that’s the only option.

wind gusts?
parking on an incline with front facing uphill?

I got tired of this too. When was replacing the ratty tatty inner door panel with a very clean one from the junkyard I decided to do something about it. Unbolt inner door panel (AKA door card). Unbolt speaker assembly (black plastic surround with speaker in it). Unbolt door check assembly. Remove via speaker hole. Take to bench vise. Carefully crush/pinch the metal walls of the block together to deform them and create more pressure on the door check shaft (The orange highlighted part). If you do too much you bend the entire assembly and can't bolt it back in. It took 3 attempts to get the resistance I wanted, and I had to bend the mounting flange flat again to bolt it in. BUT with some care it works, and the door stays open even on a hill. Not a huge hill, but it's not slicing my legs off and sending my cup of tea all over my seat anymore.

I'm sure someone will say it's a 20 buck part from the dealer, but this was an exercise in 'can I fix it?'.

EDIT: just checked some prices, $85-120 depending on vendor. Glad I Macguyvered it.



EDIT EDIT: just looking at that and thinking about the job you could probably get good results with less overall deformity by using a flat metal punch and hammer to dimple the friction block.

 

I needed all 4 door checks replaced. Dealer quoted $95 each for new parts. I found this listing on ebay and thought it would be worth trying. Ordered, and only took about 2 weeks to receive from Russia, not the 2 months the estimated shipping time showed. If you're going to replace it, it takes only about 15 minutes more time to repair it properly. The old rubber pieces inside this thing were completely worn out and flat. The new pieces are raised to grab the rod. This kit really worked and all my doors hold like new. I saved about $350 over new replacements. That is my review on the listing. in 22+ years i honestly do not ever recall my doors being able to be 'held' in place unaffected by wind or gravity on a hill!

are the newer 1st gens different door checks than mine?
i know mine squeak like heck in the springtime with the climate change effect

 

Yeah I am going to have to see about that repair kit at some point myself. This would be keen to have back to working. My door tries to close on level ground lol.

my passenger's side door check is making a loud creaking sound and it sounds like there is play in the assembly when I open the door all the way unlike the other side. it also makes a rattling sound when driving. the driver's side access cab door is perfectly silent. does this part need to be greased or oiled? with my door closed i'm getting rattles coming from the door check. should i try some lithium grease? silicone? is it all metal? looks like there's some rubber bushings inside that have some play in them.

 

You do know this is a 1st gen, not 3rd gen, forum, right...? No access cab doors on 1st gen Tacomas...

I agree - all of Timmy's video(s) are excellent. But be careful when using this particular one on a Gen 1 Tacoma. In particular, do NOT try to remove the top part of the armrest on a Gen 1 Tacoma as shown in his video. Just remove the two Philips screws from the bottom part of the armrest. Timmy worked on a Gen 3 Forerunner when he did his video.

ebay has new assemblies for under $30. I just put them in mine a few months ago, still working great, check my post history
