Firewall Tubing

Please do. The fender was causing issues so I figured id be trimming those last anyway.

Did you remove the shock and cycle?

 

Yep, that’s at full bump full lock. I have more to take off of the firewall but ran out of time.

Edit: that pic may not be at full bump. But I did do that for cutting.

 

What's your setup? Shocks, wheel spacers, wheels, tire size?

I had a significant amount more cutting to do on both the front near the headlight and rear on the firewall.

 

Im on 7.5” wide wheels with 3.6” BS. The narrow wheel seems to lend itself to less cutting. Stock bumps. And these are 315s and measure at 34.6” diameter.

Edit: and I have some more firewall cutting to do. I ran out of time today.

 

I took the fender off on the drivers side and was able to get a good visual on uptravel now. It baffles me that you had to cut as much as you did. This pic is full bump, stock length arms and stock bumps.

 

Of course I still had to do some trimming up front.

 

Something is not right. My truck would not do that. I’ll dig into it more tonight.

 

Your truck wouldn't do what? And I just went out and measured mine and they're true to the website, at 34.6". There's certainly some fuckery going on. Only way I could see yours going that high up is if you have no bumps or something.

 

No, my tire went straight into the wheel well where yours has at least of inch of space, or looks like it. I also measure my tire at 34.6” mounted and with air.

 

Yeah that's odd, something is up. I had about an inch or two of space until I hit inner fender.

 

Your alignment (or residual frame damage) can significantly affect where the tire rubs. Though it looks like yours is just compressing up too far. Since it looks like you have aftermarket LCAs, are you still running bumpstops?

 

Figured it out. The Dirt King LCAs are NOT to be used without looking further into bump limitation.

Installed the shock today without the spring and I'm bottoming out on the shock well before the bump makes contact with the LCA without the provided spacer. With the provided spacer the bump stop still does not contact the LCA.

 

Well there you go. And now you know so you can properly space it out. On the plus side, you will literally never rub anything ever haha

 

Haha, that's one way to look at it. The firewall still needs clearance either way but I for sure have work to do with the bump travel.

 

@desertjunkie760 I know there are other threads out there and guys that do this in their free time during lunch. It seems a bit too mundane and miserable to relive most of the experience and not something they want to relive and rehash with noobs. Thanks for this thread and pics, very helpful tips along the way. I am gathering as much info as possible so I can cut a bit at a time and then put it back together for work on Monday. I am trying to knock out one side at a time. I plan on the passenger first which seems to be the least intense. I am hoping to not have to relocate the ABS pump. I have another windshield fluid reservoir coming.

 

My intention was to consolidate some of the information out there about other's experience with the project but that's not what ended up happening. Either way, I'll share my experience and hope that others can learn from my success and failures. Thank you @EatSleepTacos for contributing as well.

For the sake of the conversation, what is your solution for the winshield fluid?

 

When I tubbed a 4runner, I was able to do one side per day. If end up having to cut up into the engine bay fender area I’d plan for one weekend per side.

If I can’t get mine to go back in, I’ll make a reservoir out of abs pipe. Then transplant the motor into it. It’ll be smaller, but better then nothing.

Or buy a plastic welder, and shorten the reservoir by a few inches.

 

Welding sheet metal is dumb.
