The time has come to see what is required to swap a Hilux RC60F into a Tacoma, which uses the RC62F. The reason for the swap, as many know, is to improve the gear ratios... and while reverse certainly tops the list, the ultra low 1st gear, better second gear ratio, and deeper .64 6th gear OD will certainly be beneficial... especially with 4.88 or 5.29 axle ratio gears.

Now, with that said, I always try to plan for the worst, but hope for the best. So, I expect there will be a difference in input shaft length when compared to the RC62F. It will be longer, or shorter, and it will be dealt with. The transfer case appears to be a bolt up, at this point.

    Comparison of ratios

    Model Hilux Tacoma
    Ratio. RC60F RC62F
    First Gear: 4.784:1 3.982:1
    Second Gear: 2.423:1 2.017:1
    Third Gear: 1.443:1. 1.321:1
    Fourth Gear: 1.00:1 1.00:1
    Fifth Gear: 0.777:1 0.848:1
    Sixth Gear: 0.643:1 0.713
    Reverse: 4.066:1 3.385:1

Order has been placed. When the unit arrives, we'll start the process. As usual, comments and criticisms welcomed.

I believe this is another one of those spots where @RedBeard1 has some expertise. He had me drooling over those ratios.

Too bad that this tranny will be no help with that T case experiment.

I'm truly not trying to be a wise guy here, but if all the gears are wrong, wouldn't it be much easier to just regear front and rear diffs?

Yes, since tail of the trans should be the same, the transfer case swap won't change.

Those gears are great for what I want. If this thing was all on road play, I'd likely find a way to swap an RA62 or 63 from a Lexus IS 250. Close ratio stack, and even reverse is lower. Axle gears will also be changed.

IDK. On or off road, those ratios, esp 1st, 6th, and reverse are rocking comparatively. If I had a choice, I would have spec'ed something like that. I like long ratios.

At the same time, I am still pleased with the MT as stock.

Why not just regrar the axles and be done?
A coworker put in 5:29s and suggested 4:88s for stock to 33’s.

There is only so much to gained, or band aided, by only changing the axle ratio with the current manual transmission and my 285/75R17 tires.

Regear an AT or MT? 5.29s in an AT are almost the same as the stock 4.30 in an MT.

Watching the fuck out of this thread because those ratios are exactly what I want in my truck. Fifth might actually mean something with that combo and reverse would suck far less.

Here is the ratio comparison for my truck. RC60F with 4.88 and 285/75r17 (33.4") vs RC62F with 4.30 and 31.5" tires.

    Holy Variables, Batman.

Either way, the ratios on true 33s look great compared to stock.

    AT

I didn't realize that the MT was geared that differently....if what you stated is the case then I'd guess that there's zero issues with the MT.

On a side question don't the AT's have a higher towing capacity than the MT's?

putting fitment aside how the fuck are you gonna trick the tcu into playing nicely with these ratios.

that seems like a giant fuckfest

I've done a mod or two
It's a manual trans... so uh, that should answer that question. I'm thinking all these guys will have to do for the entire swap is swap the bellhousings, everything else looks the same. Hell you could probably keep your stock case and just change the center gear/bearing plate stack.

Every gear and shaft will need to be swapped.. input, output, counter, etc. Ultimately, this will be the way to go, less money. Plus when opened up, we can figure out how to blueprint, improve shifts, treat and coat gears and shafts.

On a side note, I swapped a 2nd gen taco RA60 into my old 1993 FZJ80. With a mildly built engine, it was an absolute BLAST to drive.

    Normally you would think so.

Mat from OVtune has had his nose in the ECM code on these trucks for more than two years now. Even on the manual trans, there are different tables being used per gear, including neutral and reverse.
Before anyone yells at me about the lack of switches/sensors in the RC-62F for anything but neutral and reverse - yes I know that. But the ECM must be using speed/rpm/clutch switch to "guess" what's going on. It follows then, that changes from stock setup may "confuse" the system.
The good news is that he's working on a single table tune for the M/T that should make things much more consistent.

One other thing - which I assume the OP is aware of: The RC-62F does not have the "snout" on the input shaft. No pilot bearing in the ass end of the crank on the 2GR-FKS.

I’m not doing that. Reverse top speed is what? 5 mph at a reasonable rpm?

Toyota listened to what it’s customers wanted finally. 45 mph in reverse. That’s why we have backup cameras. So we can haul fucking ass in reverse.

Lol your M/T has a better setup than the RC-62F.

Seriously though, the RC60F has better ratios where the 3G V6 Taco needs it IMO.
