Anybody had a carrier bearing go out on them? I have a weird sound from the rear of the vehicle under power. It goes away when I coast, but immediately comes back when I engage the slightest gas pedal. I thought maybe the rear end was going, but I checked the diff fluid and it was full. Jacked up the back end and both wheels bearings seem smooth. I can’t see any play in the u-joints. It seems like there is excessive play in the carrier bearing. I am all out of Schlitz at this point. I don’t mind pulling the shaft and changing u-joints and bearing just concerned about doing more damage. It almost sounds like a slapping sound as the tires rotate under power then just stops when I coast. I can’t see any marks where it is hitting but something is not happy back there.

Just to be sure did you check u-joints with it chocked/in neutral/parking brake off? So the shaft doesn't have a load on it?

The carrier is just a bearing stuck into some rubber, they come seperate really easy. Generally it's not a big deal, the rubber is still there keeping the bearing from hitting the surrounding metal, which is keeping the driveshaft from flying out.

If you're gonna replace the carrier you might as well replace at least the center u-joint while you have it apart.

Yeah, so I chocked the front then jacked up the rear axle in neutral and no parking brake. There feels like an excessive amount of play but I can’t understand why the noise only happens under load and not while coasting. I agree that while replacing carrier I will go ahead and replace all the u-joints while am there.

I am just nervous that it has something to do with the pinion gear. I have a solid spacer in the rear, but may swing by ECGS and let them hear it. I don’t quite have the funds to swing a Dana 60 rear right now and hope it is just bearings.

Very much sounds like a carrier bearing.

Interesting solution here if you don't want to keep having the same problem every few years.

Weird sound? Can you describe it more? Like a whine, grinding noise, clunk, etc. A whine under accel. could be a bearing. Does it get worse under accel turning one direction or another.

    Possible causes:
    Carrier bearing
    U joints
    Pinion bearings
    Ring and pinion
    Spider gears
    Something in the transmission

Under accel a high pitched whine most of what I've seen have been issues with spider or ring and pinions the gears get a sharp edge to them causing the noise. But it could be any number of things isolating the noise as best as possible is your best bet to diagnose correctly.

Yeah, I know this is not much help and appreciate the feedback. It does not appear to change at all when turning or leaning any one direction. It is not high pitched. It is also not a solid consistent noise. It is a sound that rotates like something wrapped around the driveshaft or tire that slaps the bed with every rotation. It is more like a flat tire slapping sound. I am leaning more towards the pinion since it only happens under power. It can best be heard at 40mph just due to the truck being in 5th and low supercharger whine so as not to drown it out. I only have to barely touch the gas pedal for it to come on. It does not occur in neutral at speed and is definitely not from the engine. The ring gear would howl either underbload or coast but the pinion is pulled coasting and this noise only happens when it is put under the slightest load.

Looks awesome. I ordered a carrier bearing to replace this weekend but may return it and go for this. I just want to fix the problem and am not really concerned over a premature part failure.

I've got that one, it seems to be holding up good. The only annoying thing is having to setup your driveline working angles again as it's not a plug and play setup.

That is probably part of my problem since I never really did much to set them up in the first place. I threw a couple axle shims in when I first lifted, I had no vibes so I never looked back.

Welp, all new carrier bearing and three new rear u-joints and still the same driveline noise. I guess it is in the rear diff. No noise with rear driveshaft removed. I don’t see how the pinion loosened up since I have a solid spacer.
