What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

+1 to relocated solenoid and upgraded wires. The built in wireless is awesome too.

 

Were did you put yours?

 

I built a box that wraps around the battery. I mounted both the solenoid and an additional isolator to that box.

It did crap out on me the one time i went off solo in the snow. Was ready to hike about 6 miles when a bulldozer that was clearing the road came by. Lucky me.

It was a blown fuse. Now i keep a bag of them in the truck

 

Most of the Smitty reviews I've seen are good and they beat the shit out of them because they are the cheapest and it still holds up to the more expensive ones. It's just lacking in features.

So you don't have 3-5' of 4ga or bigger wire just hanging out fully attached to the winch that is unfused. Asking for a fire that way.

This. Though I guess since my solenoid is so close to the battery, it's less applicable for me. But it's also an easy way for me to stop a potential runaway winch as well. I have it on a switch and that switch only has power when I have the key in the ignition. I can stop the winch by turning the truck off the accessory position or with the flip of a switch. And the box is made from leftover 20 GA I had from tubbing.

What fuse do you have the winch on? I was told fusing the winch is probably not a good idea because of the potential amperage spikes it sees.

 

I just purchased the new Smittybilt XRC gen3 9500lb winch w/ synthetic line. it just came out and has a bunch of load sensing features that look cool.

Yea I can't wait for it to come and test it out. There isn't much feedback or reviews on it yet since it's so new.
Only thing I wish it had is the wireless ability like the one you have.

 

I was going to say, that's the biggest dislike I currently see. I would most definitely rewire the controller plug to be in the cab for a non wireless system.
