I read a 260+ page thesis about Isaac A. last night in addition to countless web sites about SciFy writing history. Before SciFy it was called Pulp Fiction. That was the term given to the type and process of actually creating the media it was presented on.

They talked about how I.A. and other writers based their SciFy stories on Cowboy hero's changing things like horses and revolvers for futuristic vehicles and Ray guns.

Maybe I dug too deep though

Welcome to the thread where even a flux capacitor won't help you keep up.

Best part is though, no one will rip you for it. Much!

Morning All!!! If this is the thread about nothing, I have plenty to contribute.

What say we get this day over with? There's tree stands to hang, arrows to refletch, re-purposed fencing to hang, taters to bring in, a son to watch (first fight?), cold beer and bourbon to drink, campfires to watch, loved ones to hug. So let's get it done and move on to the more important things.

Good morning guys. Great cow joke btwo_O
Good morning. Going to Illinois today. Need to check a camera and possibly hang another. May wait on cooler weather to hang second camera. But first, a buddy is bringing his crossbow over to sight in. It will be my first time to shoot one. Hope my target is big enough.

Yes, I have read all of Asimov's works. The reference is to Hannibal.

    Posting your videos again, Coop?

We are gonna have to work on your seizure dance moves! Don’t post that shit again until there is improvement!

    Don’t encourage this!!!

Yeah, it's all too easy to over-analyze it...and many do.

So you have the Galactic Empire undergoing an irreversible decline.
The parallels with the Roman Empire are obvious enough.
Social, cultural and political dry rot.
And a new science of psychohistory capable of predicting (and shaping) human events (in broad outline).
    Blah blah.

    All very plausible and interesting.
Though in these times, the idea of a self conscious elite scientifically manipulating human civilization...
...is unsettling, to say the least.
The idea goes back at least as far as Plato... "Philosopher kings".
    Grr...

But the books are read mostly because they're just ripping good stories. :)

I had to think about that a bit.

And perhaps I see why you picked Hannibal.
Because of his strategy of envelopment?
Double envelopment in the case of Hannibal's annihilation of a Roman army at Cannae.
Three dimensional in the case of Bel Riose.

    But the explanation is simpler:
An empire in decline trying to stage a comeback under a strong emperor and a strong general.
It fails because the success and rising prestige of the general becomes a threat to the emperor himself.

In the 6th century: Justinian and Belisarius.
In the umptieth year of the Galactic Empire: Cleon II and Bel Riose.

    Bel Riose = Belisarius

Asimov was being cute. His choice of the general's name leaves no doubt. :p
