Well aside from the speeding ticket curtesy of robocop from Onecowville, Wyoming... Iv had a good day. Spent the morning and early afternoon bombing throw the black hills in South Dakota dodging cows. Also swing by mt Rushmore and crazy horse. Trying to make it to Colorado tonight so I can have the whole weekend to explore.

Eh, just pay it. Cheaper than circling back. 9/10 times, they write those tickets BECAUSE they know you aren't gonna return to onecowville to fight it.

As for your question about trails in CO...

I don't know much about northern Colorado, so I'm not much help there. You mentioned checking out Denver. From there I would head toward Aspen. There's an awesome little pizza joint in between Winter Park and Fraser called Hernando's. My wife thinks that it is still the best pizza she's ever had....if you want to take a detour. Also in that area, it looks like you can take the scenic route to Aspen via Loveland Pass. From Aspen, I would take either Pearl Pass (Preference) or Taylor Pass over to Crested Butte.

From Crested Butte, I would head toward Marble. You'll drive through a pretty neat little town called Gothic along the way. I think the trail that you will take is called Devil's punch bowl. This should also take you by an iconic building along the river (Crystal mill maybe?). There are plenty of trails in the Gunnison National Forest. I'd figure out how to get back down to Gunnison (another awesome pizza place called Mario's there).

Then head over to Ouray via Montrose and on down to Silverton via the Million Dollar Highway. Spend a few days in this area. Cinnamon Pass and Engineer Pass make up the alpine loop. I've done Engineer pass in a mostly stock 4runner with no issues. Imogene pass, black bear pass (iconic), and yankee boy basin are in the same area just to name a few. Spend a few days in this area, but I was not impressed with the Lake City Brewery.

I think there is a 4th edition now, but this book is worth its weight in gold: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/gu...eCWe-JmIrEEfQFl1P4W57QDYibyLeeQoaAlZiEALw_wcB if you can figure out how to get it. It does an excellent job of outlining trails and includes difficulty levels for each. I borrowed it from someone when I was last there and it was AWESOME to have. The version with the binder rings is easier to flip through, but also more expensive.

Creede is another cool little town. If you make it over there, in the next town over is a place called the lazy bear cabins. I can't recommend them enough. You get a 2 bedroom cabin with kitchen and bathroom for extremely cheap and the owner is super laid back. Don't expect much from customer service because the owner only stays in the office for a few hours a day. Leave a message and he'll call you back. He left us a hidden key and we paid the next morning because when we stayed we were coming in late. Who else in this day and age will let you stay before you pay?

I'm sure you'll find other things in CO. There is so much public land that it's awesome! I'd probably head down toward Durango next. I think that area has some of the indian houses that are built into (or maybe carved out of) the sides of mountains. I can't remember what those are called though, so I'm not much help in looking them up. That should put you close to the Utah border though.

Just got back in cell reception. Eating lunch at Fort Collins and then walking around a bit. Def a cool town. Found a great camping spot in the dark last night and woke up to an incredible view. Then took the pup on a nice hike.
