I wanted to chime in here, there is some truth in both statements
Yes the factory camera is 6V, and Yes it always "on"

with that said I think the installers gave you decent / OK advice.

now does that mean it can't handle 12V? maybe, mabe not.....

I myself bought a voltage reducer that brought my 12v down to 6V, and that's how I power my factory rear camera on my 09 AC Taco. Its always powered on with the truck, and I wired in an override button so I can activate it anytime ( check on that car who's waaay too close in traffic, or to check on the hitch while I'm towing, or to keep it on if I'm doing a lot of quick forward / reverse movements )

I just wanted to clarify the voltage part. I'm not here to debate weather it can't run off 12v forever. :crapstorm:

There really isn’t need for a debate. The answer is you can’t nor want to run a 12v into a 6v camera. This is why you bought a voltage regulator. You know the correct answer lol.

I returned my Pioneer from Crutchfield today. I may get the Alpine since it works for you. I could not get my back up camera to work and everything was plugged correctly. Crutchfield was confused also when I called. We even tried the idatalink maestro to try and make it work.

If this worked and it looks like you used the Crux and it works....does your steering wheel controls work. That was my first issue with it.

Running this Alpine in my shop hauler Duramax for a few months now. Really like it so far! Carplay is pretty nice being able to control my music and use Google Maps that I'm familiar with. Capacitive touch screen is really nice on a unit in this low price point. Love that the back up camera I added can be activated any time, nice for checking up on the car close behind at a stop light or for checking the hitch/cargo on my trailer while driving.
So far I would definitely recommend this HU for someone looking in the price/feature range.

Anyone else having issues w/ Android Auto? From my limited research the factory USB cable may not carry enough power for my phone(Pixel 3). The icon displays for 5-7ish seconds before disappearing from the head unit leaving Android Auto running on the phone. Also any trick for USB recognition? I formatted a thumb drive to FAT32 and it tries to read it for 3-4min before giving up and displaying "Device not recognized".

That's next on the list, was it not able to play MP3s(or simply recognize a drive) out of the box without a firmware update?

I personally have never used Android Auto (iPhone user) or tried to use a thumb drive to play music. It definitely sounds like a power issue though. I didn't use the USB adapter that came with the head unit though - the usb connector from the truck fit, so I didn't see the point in adding an adapter.

I would just suggest trying the updated firmware before other troubleshooting... Unfortunately I couldn't find a list of the fixes in the different firmware updates to know if there were any changes that could help you.

I can't imagine that is the problem. How do you like the KTA-450 amp? I am contemplating grabbing one. I have all new Kicker speakers / tweeters and am wondering how much of a difference the amp would make. Are you running the stock speakers still, or aftermarket? How is the sound?

Sitting on Infinity Reference components for the front door and 6.5s for the back doors. Will hopefully get those out in within the next two weekends. Have some of Noico sound deadener I plan on using as well, the factory speakers took a huge jump in quality with the HU+Powerpack installed.

Has anyone figured out why the backup camera does not work from the button on the radio? I installed this radio last weekend and the camera works fine when I’m in reverse but it would be nice to be able to hit the button on the radio to bring up the camera at other times.

I was told that if the OEM unit didn't have this feature than the aftermarket wouldn't be able to have it. Unless you install a separate switch I guess.

Make sure you plug that phono plug for the steering wheel control into the back of the Alpine.

My Alpine makes a high pitched squeal sometimes, I spend most of my time listening to AM radio and it's quite annoying. It just seems to randomly happen and will keep squealing until I turn off the car. My wife says she can't hear it but her hearing isn't as good as mine. I bought an Android Tacoma deck from Cartrimhome, but turns out this thing was made for the JBL system so can't use it either. I do plan on returning the Alpine to Crutchfield, it's just very unusual for an Alpine product to make noise like this, almost like they didn't make this product or something I've been using Alpine for years and if it's one thing they do well is make clean powered head units. All my connections are soldered and solid as can be. No amps, just powering it off the head unit.

Ordered open box from Crutchfield with the Crux interface and ReadyHarness service. Should be here tomorrow. Curious what I'm getting quality wise for $355 total, but seems like a solid unit for someone just wanting CarPlay.
