    Beaver (the rodent kind)

Oh wait that is just Nova playing a beaver in front of a beaver damn. Beaver, road hazards

Isle Royal has no deer, so the theory is that a moose-wolf study there is accurate due to moose being the only food source. However due to the limited population size I have my doubts on that. Wildlife biologist have been doing the moose wolf intersection study in Mn. since the decline started. The area is from Ely to the West, down to Isabella over to the tip of the Arrowhead.

    boundry waters map.jpg

Which just so happens to be the area that I hunt ruff grouse in and for more than a decade I have spent most of my free time in. They claim there are no whitetail deer in that area (and it is a huge area, mostly unpopulated).

Float plane flying over Isabella which is about 20 homes

Gunflint Lake, the center of the lake and toward the top of the picture is Canada.

Wait is that a deer?! So much for the biologist that are experts. Lots of deer around although this was 5 years ago. There are almost no deer left now. Wonder why... This is in the parking spot just outside the cabin that night.

Tried to get a picture of the wolves in the pack as they circled me but had a hard time holding a camera, flashlight so the camera could focus, and pistol with only 2 hands. And it was -32°

    Oh you betcha, yeah!

The moose population in Mn. has rapidly been declining over the last decade. In fact can no longer hunt them in Mn. And the wolf population has been exploding. Mn. has more wolves than all the Western States except Alaska, combined. And more than any other State. The lowest it has ever been is ~1,000. They have been under Federal protection, they took the State rights away to manage them. That is supposed to be changed soon, but good chance it is too late for the moose in Mn.

Many "scientist" immediately claimed global warming as the cause for the decline in the moose population. Those of us that spend time in the woods where wolf and moose intersect knew the reason.

If you find moose chit you will always find wolf scat with it. Because the wolves are always right on the heels of the moose.

You can do all the Moose habit improvement you want.

But until the wolf numbers come down the moose population will also. I see moose every year, usually running across a trail or road. And also see wolves, they are seldom far behind the moose. To the credit of the Mn. DNR they waited until a detailed study was conducted to publish results. More than 50% of moose calves are killed by wolves each year. Add to that other mortality factors and the older moose that are taken by wolves and it is a spiral downward in the population.

Last count I knew 15 dogs were killed in Duluth, in city limits, by wolves this summer. I've had them close to me and the dog sometimes uncomfortably close. Because they are Federally protected you can not shoot them in defense of your dog only your own life. They have lost their fear of humans. Time has come to reduce their numbers which will put the fear back in them. Others that don't agree- which is the policy makers in DC, need to have a pack or 2 in their backyard. That will change their mind real quick. Ain't no damn TV show here, it is real world shit.

    Just saying...
