I appreciate all of the information, guys.

I’ve picked up new CV Axles after work earlier today, so that’s my special project tomorrow afternoon. Then I guess I better get back on track with my plans for regearing.

I’m now a certified CV Axle replacement specialist. But not really that special. Nothing flew apart, flew off, or mangled the passenger side wheel well on my short test drive after the job. Wasn’t too bad, honestly. The other side ought to go way faster tomorrow, when the second axle comes in.

The only hiccup was the Axle separating when I tried pulling it from the front differential. But I found a nifty little angle with my pry bar, and using enough force to either dislocate it, or my shoulder, it came on out.

Haha, yes, I know. But these little jobs I’m learning on. I feel it never hurts to know as much as I can about my truck. I’m enjoying it, even though it is like Level 1 stuff.

Pro tip. Get your biggest cold chisel and hammer it between the axle housing and CV. You want to have the main body of the chisel between the two, then prying the CV out takes much less effort.

I found a big flathead and engineering hammer was the easiest when I swapped CVs.

I’ve got several wide-blade concrete chisels that I think will do as you’re suggesting, when I do the drivers side later. All of my other chisels are more delicate wood working chisels.

I believe y’all would have been amused by the spectacle of my labors, haha.

In case anyone was interested, the replacement for the driver side was a breeze. From beginning to end took about 35 minutes, and I don’t even have impact tools.

    And this suggestion —
    Worked like a charm.

If I ever find a Makita tool sale I might pick up one of their 1/2” drive high torque drills. $219.00 doesn’t seem too bad, and I’ve already got all their chargers and batteries for all of Makita cordless drills, sanders, and circular saws.
