My dream is to buy a 2012-2015 (preferably 2013) MGM DCSB AT V6 4x4 Tacoma. I want to get a color matched grill and bumper so I'm thinking a sport but would great but I'd also be be fine getting an sr5 and just painting those parts (unless there's a reason the sport is better besides the hood scoop which I don't care about). I originally wanted a 3rd gen but don't want to spend that much then wanted a 1st gen but don't want the potential issues that come with high mileage vehicles. What I'm running into now is that these Tacomas (as you all know) are keeping their value so well that I can't find one in my budget (sub $15,000).

Based on the rate that Tacomas have depreciated over the years due to miles and/or age, how many years would I have to wait to find a 2013 under $15,000?

    According to this site
    https://usedfirst.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/

It looks like a 2013 was just over $32,000 new.
Your budget is $15,000 which is roughly about 47% of new price.
So you will need to figure out how many years it takes to depreciate 53%

In reality, there’s more to depreciation than time.
Condition is the biggest factor for me.

Ok, enough with the technical talk.
I hope you find one today. Good luck with your search.

I got lucky and found my '13 for 17.5 which I know is still more than you want to pay but according to KBB and NADA it should have went for 21.
Just keep looking you can find a good deal if you look good enough.

    Good Luck

Only ones I've seen close to that have a salvage or rebuilt title. I think (and hope for my sake) it'll be a while before they drop that low.

I bought mine almost exactly a year ago. 2012 AC. TRD OR with the TX appearance package.

When deal was done I got it for about 17k. Even at their asking price it was a deal. I had made searching for the right model a job for about 4-5 months and had financing ready.

My advice would be to save more if you can, or just wait it out.

another option is to convert 05-11 and do a conversion. should cost 1k-2k to convert. might save you a few $$$ for that option and really good thread on here

I would hope to sell my 2008 TRD OR w/ 145k for around $15k. So might be a little while.

I'd be happy to wait that long. What makes you think that's a possible amount of time? And would this be a junky sport, a nice SR5, a junky SR5?

That's a good way to think about how long it'll take. I will probably have to come up on my number because I don't want to wait 5+ years but I also don't want a truck with a ton of miles or wasn't taken care of well. Thanks for the well wishes! I know patience will be key to getting something good.

What a great buy! I'd be fine coming up to 17.5 and Mica would be my second pick for color.

Where did you find out and did you spend a lot of time digging and waiting? Were there any condition issues?

I don't think I'd want a salvage or rebuilt so I'll probably have to come up on my number. If I had a tacoma I'd also wish it would take a while to drop that low =D

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I will save more and wait it out. I'm getting antsy to buy but know I really can wait even a year or two more.

That's a cool thought. What else would I have to do besides getting a grill to go from pre-refresh to post-?

What did it cost you originally. Hope you get what you're asking for!

For reference. I bought my 2013 Limited double cab long bed with 142k miles for around $17k

Edit: I bought it in march

Just picked up the exact car you want a 2013 MGM DCSB 4x4 with 37k miles for $23,000 just for reference. Bought it from a family member but equivalent trucks at dealerships and private sellers i saw were more around $28k for the 4x4 version. I still see gen 1 tacomas with 100k + miles selling for 15k. Im curious though what interests you specifically about the 2013 model year?

Would also be worth asking folks who have what you like, to let you know if they ever want to let go of it, you’d be interested.

What they would get trade in is closer to what you are wanting to pay.

I got $12,500 for my 2007 trade in and the dealer posted it a few days later for $18500 even had it over 20k for a day on their site.

It depends on where you're buying and the condition you're willing to accept. If I was looking around my parts (Hawaii) for a great condition, lower miles Tacoma 4x4 (not sure if you're looking for a 4x4), the price for a 2012+ is $19K+, and I'm going to guess a lot aren't in the condition I look out for. So for my parts, I'm thinking maybe 5 years until I'd see something worthy of $15K and less for a 2012+ Tacoma.

If you ever look at a 3rd Gen. Be sure to test drive it well (stretches and uphill).

Nothing wrong with 100k+ for the 1st Gens. They last and drive better than the 3rd Gens (my opinion because I've owned all Gens). Safety features get better with later Gens though. Good luck on your search.

Mine is a 2009 and you couldn't buy it for 15k. I don’t think your budget is high enough for what you seek.

I won’t be selling my 2013 any time soon...if ever.

But in its current state: 110k, never garaged a day of its life, routinely pushed past factory payload, 80+ miles of dirt roads every week for the commute and all routine maintenance at manufacturer recommended intervals I would still list it for sale at 25k+.

The fact that you can no longer purchase a TRD OR w/ a 6’ bed and a MT stateside makes these trucks unicorns.

Good luck w/ your search OP.

I was at a dealership the other day and saw a 2012 MGM 4x4 DCLB SR5 with 75k miles for 23,600. These things hold value. I bought my 2010 DCLB SR5 new in 2010 for 27K OTD. Crazy!

Sport vs sr5 doesn’t make much difference in the price of a used Tacoma, the condition and miles are what matters. When I bought my 2014 new I was originally looking for a used one, but a tacos with over 100k were selling for over $20k, so I thought i would be crazy not to buy a new one for $28k.
