Correct, and you'd have to figure out how to wire up the center differential lock actuator to be able to engage 4x4 instead of having the center differential active.

    I did not say 3rd gen 4runner, i said 03 4runner which is 4th generation.

And in case you did not read my post, the case from the 4runner is known as a full time transfer case, NOT a multi-mode case. Just trying to make sure people are clear so in the terminology. There are both multi-mode and full time cases in the 4th gen 4runners, I believe the multi-mode cases came in the TRD pro or some fancy model.

Edit: I may be wrong on the year the manual shift was offered in the 4runner. The info out there is not very good lol

Ah.... yea I read that wrong.

In all my research I never saw them to have a manual shift. I thing that was the 01-02 years.

The multimode for the 4th gen was only in the v6 while the v8 has full time awd.
At least that how it was around the 04-07 years they might have made it only for the higher stuff towards the end. :notsure:

That could be, so either way the best bet for tacomas that want the "most manual shifting" AWD case, it is to use the 6 speed FJ cruiser t-case. If you combine that with the front differential tube, you'll have AWD and 4x4 with only one electronic actuator.

Been searching through this thread, looking for folks who kept the single shifter. Would like to see how folks made the J shift pattern work. I saw @ktmrdr setup, any others to show? Thank you!

I've got a FROR twin stick for an FJ case I won't be using if anyone wants it. I think they're $190 new and $30 for the boot. I'll do $200 for both, shipped. It's just chilling on the FJ case, not even tightened down. Literally brand new.

Figured this might be the best place to drop this.

    Edit: added pic with boot

Have a question regarding this swap. My case came with all the plugs cut off. I know that in order to get the lights on the dash to function something has to be plugged in to the case to read what it is doing. Can I just unscrew the the plugs from the stock case and screw them in to the fj case? Bought the case from Wyatt and he has been anything but responsive since.

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah, you’re suppose to swap your sensors from stock case to the fj case

What do folks do with the neutral position sensor? Leave it hanging or wire up a basic LED indicator?

If I remember right, I just used one of the sensors from the fj case just to plug the hole.

That's kinda what I figured. I'll see if theres a blank available to fill that hole in the transfer case but I'm pretty sure I dont care about a neutral indicator since I dont have one now, and ultimately I'll have 3 ways to get to neutral. I think I can probably live with a sensor wire dangling and connected to nothing. I've mentally blocked out more important things.

I'm also super glad I re-read this entire thread again last night. I realized that I didnt properly grind off that little nub that sticks up on the front of the hi/lo shift rail when I did the twin stick mod...an issue that @HolyHandGrenade ran into. It's easy to overlook that nuance.

Yeah my sensors that came with the case I just cut the wire off at the sensor so I had nothing dangling. Was just going to use a bolt but yeah couldn’t find one that size. Don’t think I have any pics of it. Let me see

While I appreciate it, honestly, dont waste your time. I can live with it. I will keep the FJ sensors in the FJ case and solder on the taco connectors to the hi/lo and 4wd sensors so I can sell the taco case with the taco sensors, but still have a quick disconnect on the fj tcase.

Ok, so the Tacoma case has two sensors and the fj has 3... what goes where and what is just a hole filler? Fj case has two on driver side and 1 on passenger, Tacoma is 2 on solenoid box.

    Yep.
IIRC, forward drivers side is the 4WD switch, and the passenger is the neutral switch. Aft drivers side gets the plug.
