I hear where you are coming from and I guess from a casual/trail riding bike I can see that. From my Dh buddies back out east...yea man our crew punctured and cracked intense m16c, Santa Cruz v10s, and transitions of all types. I think for the right discipline and type of riding you do either carbon will be overkill or a plausible risk. Out east we pound a lot of rock gardens with a lot of technical stuff. Top of that, the Dh/freeride arena is just unpredictable. If I’m gonna run a bike that I know will only be trail riding with non-gravity folks then yea carbon is an easy decision...but all my bikes are subject to stupid hucks and pounding rocks. Don’t get me wrong though, elasticity and overall strength alum is no where close to carbon.

Haha I know too wel what you mean...almost punctured my Santa Cruz nomad carbon when I was trying to rest it on a rock to help build a road gap. I’m sure it would take more depth to puncture, but my buddies were def like wtf man you got to be careful with carbon...can’t just lay it on anything.

Different stokes for different folks. I’m not married to any one frame material. Running a full carbon frame for my one bike to do it all. Zero worries here.

Just go ride what you got or what you like.

Kuat Add on installed today. Biking with the whole family this afternoon. I have the Kuat swing out arm too plus a drop hitch extender. After I installed my high clearance rear bumper my tailgate would hit the rack and I couldn't fully open my drawers. the whole set up adds 67" to the length of my truck.:anonymous:

SCARY cantilever when its swung out fully loaded. haha!

Just gotta load up the cooler with drinks and wait for it to cool down.

that is a lot of weight so far back, I can't imagine you can see out of the back, being that the bikes sit so high.

First off, I'm glad we can have civil discussions and talk without butt-hurt feelers.

*Disclaimer: I've only ridden Devinci and Giant carbon frames and NOX farlow carbon hoops.
I honestly have never seen that. Resting on a rock should absolutely never, ever, ruin a carbon frame. Neither should shuttling, or banging around in general. The only dent I've seen on my carbon frame was when I smashed the downtube on a rock I was hoping to clear (but didn't). Even that didn't ruin the frame, just a small dent, all integrity was there.
@honda50r and @Gunshot-6A can vouch I don't ride slow or take it easy on my gear.
    Different strokes...

Rode today, hit some fun but punishing trails. Always a good day on the bike.

My Yeti Bigtop is the best/worst of both. AL front triangle and CF rear triangle. I thought I’d shown this before but here goes. Strafing a rock garden on a well-known local when I took a hard landing on a baby head that knocked the rear sliders out of whack and pushed the tire tread into the left seat stay (CF). The outer tread blocks ground all the way into the top layers of carbon, nearly 2mm deep. I stopped as quickly as I could, re-aligned the wheel, and kept strafing the trails. I then raced US MTB Nat championships at Snowshoe and placed 9th. That was July of 2018... I rode it until Feb of this year, then had it fixed at Calfee.

Singlespeed, rigid, hard tail, and as hard on equipment as anyone could be. I’m no CF fanboi but between my frame and the CF wheels of the other guys I race with; it’s damn durable stuff.

To each his own I guess...

You would be surprised what a stacked shuttle rig at speed can do to a carbon bike with pedals being close. Seen a penetration before due to that, guy sent in his frame after that day since he still wanted some runs in.

yup. I already can't see as it is with the shell and tint. my reverse camera is partially blocked as well.

we just made it back from a long in town trip and the rack worked great. very happy with it.

I really enjoyed riding in Bend. So much access, and such a MTB friendly community. Loved it so much, we're looking at relocating there in a year...

Will do! Hoping for next early summer. Wifey and I are both teachers, just need to find a job. We currently work in the most competitive district in the CO, at an International Baccalaureate school. OR teaching license in hand already, 15 years experience on my part, 5 on hers. We should be good to go, hopefully.
Have you ridden the MRT yet? I did most/all of the stuff between Bachelor and town. Hoping to find some backcountry and rough style trails also.

Don't you live in Memphis? A 160mm bike sounds excessive out there
