From what the service manager told me yesterday, the clutch is only covered for 12,000 miles. I'm having issues getting my throwout bearing problems solved. It's become quite the headache.

I had the chirp and rattles so I bought the PDM kit and had it installed yesterday. The noises are gone and hopefully it stays that way. This was on an 07 with 70k miles.

Wouldn't have known about this fix without this forum so thanks everybody!

Add me to the list. 2006 tacoma with 40k miles on it. Sound just started last week. I called the dealer shit and made an app. They tried to tell me it probably wont be under my warranty, but I have other plans. Any tips for my bout on Friday?

I would not pay a dime for this, not for the inspection, nada. Just tell them some bs (like they love to do) about you hearing of a TSB, and that someone at Toyota told you it was covered because it's a known defect.

Yours may just be the TOB by itself, the isssue with everyone esle's trucks are 6 speeds. The 5 speed is much different, and a better tranny from what I have heard.

Ok, here something I am wondering. Is the 6 speed on the 4x4 different from the 6 speed on the 2wd (prerunner)?? It seems every single poster with this issue has a 4x4.

So its looking like dealer #1 is telling me that the TOB/ pilot shaft issue is a wear item and I need a new clutch. Even with the literature that I gathered thanks to you guys here, they are still telling me I will have to suck up the costs. My truck is in the shop right now so ill know for sure in a few hrs. It amazes me that a truck with 40k miles on it could be having this issue!

I am taking mine in to the dealer in the next couple of weeks. The powertrain warranty specifically covers the transmission case. If they tell me it's just the clutch, my next question will be how long do they guarentee the new clutch when they put it in. Might be worth having them do it just so they have to stand behind it when it comes back in six months.

Worst part about this is before I bought the truck, I did quite a bit of online reading and everyone was talking about how much the automatic's shift points sucked. So I bought the stick. Then Toyota fixed the automatic with the reflash. *SIGH*

Hope you get it taken care of.

Do not replace the clutch!!!! Tell them no. I will put money on ot your clutch is fine. The dealerships have no idea what the fuck they're talking about. The pilot shaft is molded on the bell housing, which has nothing to do with the clutch. Read the fj forum, changing the clutch does nothing. It will take away the sound for a while, but it will come right back. They ust want to rip you for a grand.

Believe me I know what your talking about. I have read both of these threads like 5 times. When I tried to tell the dealer this info today they denied that the pilot shaft was even included in the problem. And that the shaft itself was steel and wasnt likely to be notched or damaged in any way. They said the only way to find out for sure was to crack it open... but that was followed with the fact that I would have to pay all the labor which is about 750!!! Im gonna go on my antelope hunt on tues and when I get home take it to the dealer who I bought it from. Maybe I need to take the bet and have them open it up assuming that its going to be covered by my warranty? What do you guys think. The only problem is that I spent all of my money on this truck a few months back and cant afford a new clutch.. or whatever it might be.

I just don't want to see another dealer rip off a customer because they need to make their commission check, it really pisses me off. They are full of shit, flat out. The shaft is aluminum, Toyota hasn't changed anything since the problem first arose. Dealers always try and belittle what forums and such say since they realize that cuts into their profit.........I have always noticed this. I think your best bet is to let it be, since it doesn't seem to cause any trouble other than the noise, and wait for a TSB. In the meantime, call Toyota and let them know you aren't happy and that you have the same problem everyone else does.

Edit:As far as the 750 goes, it's hard to say. You can't be sure that when they open it up they are going to tell you the truth that the shaft is worn out, and they will probably try and sell you on the new clutch.

I know I can drive the truck around with a squeeky bearing.. but im worried about causing damage to the pilot shaft and potentially causing more damage in the end.

Took mine in today. They are ordering a clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing. No mention of the bellhousing being replaced even though I led them towards that. The regional Toyota rep test drove the truck and approved the clutch replacement at 50K miles.

I'm skeptical, but not gonna complain (yet) since I'm getting a clutch done out of warranty.
