Pretty sure It’s more than just a coating issue. Its gotta be also the compounds of the steel. It’s easy to apply a better coating. It’s not like the coating is flaking off. Toyota started sealing the seams on the frame. They want as little water and crud in there as possible. High quality steel doesn’t just disintegrate after a few years of exposure. Look at all the old bridges that are around. Many have been neglected for years and haven’t rotted out. In my area they just started redoing a lot of the highway bridges. They simply sand blast the steel and apply a new coating. They aren’t ripping them out to replace the steel structure.

 

Why not galvanize the frames like other makers do?

 

I don’t think any of them use a galvanized process. Ford uses an E-coat. Chevy for a while was using some wax crap. Not sure if they went back to a coating or not. They are all kinda similar. It’s really in the grade of the steel being used. Not sure if it’s Bad alloys from the manufacture or Toyota’s engineering. Either way it should be solved after a couple years vs 2 decades.

 

Galvanized is just zinc plating. After 3-4 years exposed to road salt it still rusts to shit. 1/2" dia. grade 8 bolts zinc plated, 3 winters later:

Shopping for 10+ year old Jeeps, Nissan Frontiers, Isuzus... everything in my area has a rusted frame.

 

For sure. The weird point of comparison I have is all of the Ford work trucks at my shop that are used, abused, and put away wet, with little or no rust. I just wish Toyota did whatever Ford is doing.

 

Maybe it’s the E-coat I’m thinking of. It works if that’s what Ford is up to.

 

Tacoma frames are 11 gauge steel approx.1/8" not 1.5" structural steel. If the truck is used on brined roads it will rust if it is not rinsed with fresh water and kept coated with fluid film.

 

If you dont have Toyota apply the recomended CRC you are on your own

 

Amazon also sells the TCP global with gauge and 22" wand which works well with fluid film or wool wax. The first gun you used states Rubberized undercoating and bed liner which has a higher viscosity.

 

Yep, you’re right, I bought a 5 Gallon FluidFilm kit with the sprayer and two long wands. Did mine last year, laying on the floor with jack stands and it took me at least a day and a bit for each of my vehicles. I sprayed that stuff everywhere, including removing rubber plugs and some bolts to make sure I got it in all the body cavities (it was the first application) Doing it again this year and I won’t be as OCD so it should only take a couple of hours. Doubt i’ll ever need to worry about a 3rd Gen frame warranty........

Call the dealer or go on the owners portal and enter the VIN if it pops up then you know how long you have till it expires.

They must inspect and correct or replace. Replacement is only if there is a 10mm hole someplace on the frame from rust.

You could always take the truck to line-x or someplace and have it undercoated also...

 

Anyone have the crc done recently at the dealer? Does it get done in a day. Can’t picture them cleaning and prepping much or at all. Just started fluid filming my 17 here in ny. Can’t imagine that stuff would make Toyota’s job easier.

 

It only takes a couple hrs at most, we did this at Kia on the SU wantabe. Spray frame with contact cleaners, in and out of frame pockets and boxed areas, use compressed air to dry and blow any crap off and out, set up spray gun and spray away.... supposed to let it dry, but, that was never an option as majority of Kia owners are impatient as a shark in a feeding frenzy.

The c channel is easy, it is the boxed and closed areas, unless you can plug the holes and fill those areas, you will end up with areas inside that have little to no coverage.

 

You have to be vigilant - this is another reason I dont wait to do 10k oil changes. When Im under there, I inspect. If I ever found rust, I would sand it away and then protect the area immediately. The average owner never looks underneath.

 

Can't say for sure but I'd imagine some don't use salt vs others.

Like here in Canada. Ontario uses salt as does much of the Eastern provinces but Alberta and parts of BC just grit and no salt, because it's too cold there for salt to work.

Also why the price to buy has gone through the roof. They build 2 frames into the cost now

 

I understand the frustration many of you have with rusted frames on the Tacoma but this isn’t a Toyota only issue. Google rusty truck frame, insert any manufacturers name you want and see what comes up. Salt is the issue.
Toyota is the only maker I know of that has taken ownership of the problem.
Use FF, the spray on rubberized coatings suck unless prepped correctly and then they still hide issues. Wash the underside of the truck a couple times a year, or move to a state that doesn’t use some type of salt on the roads.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel your pain. Lived in Ohio for thirty years and had plenty of cars and trucks turn to shit in a short period of time and have replaced more than my fair share of rusty brake lines.

 

I am curious what will happen when I get this letter. My truck is heavily FF'd, so I don't know how they'll even be able to spray the CRC.
