last year for a manual transmission?

i'm in need of a newer truck. i know i want a 6 cyclinder tacoma. i also want a 5 speed. when was the last year one was produced? manual transmissions are getting to be far and few between. i need a truck that i can work with. firewood hauling with a trailer. i have been beating on my '93 ranger since '98. but it has manual locking hubs, 5 speed, and a low range that really is low. can i find a tacoma that will replace with similiar features as my old crappy ford ranger?

but they're not true manuals. They still have a computer operated throttle with all its issues.

ok so let me rephrase...i cannot buy a 4 door with a manual transmission. apparently i can get the extended with a manual. i learned to drive with a clutch. i want a clutch. i have yet to drive an automatic that the 4x4low range is truely slow enough to creep down a hill with no brake. so i am stuck with an extended if i have to have a clutch?

and controlling a selection (drive by wire) has a clutch? i want a practical truck. i think all the manufacturers need to realize that there are still folks who use their vehicles as a tool and not a ride to soccer practice.

 

Double cab shortbeds come in manual. Double cab longbeds are only autos.

 

X2 manual-by-wire is fine and the only complaint I had with my 4 cyl is that RPM sometimes kept up while shifting, but other than that, it did exactly what I ordered it to do!

 

I just bought a 2010 double cab 6 speed manual. A TRUE manual and i love it, I traded up from an acess cab with 6spd. The DC 6spds are hard to find though.

 

Then you would have to get an 02. 04's still have a semi throttle by wire system. My 01 does not have the ETCS-i system. But as the others have said, you can't get a 1st gen double cab in manual.

If you want a double cab with a manual trans you'll have to live with a 2nd gen, ETCS, & a short bed.

You could always convert a 1st gen double cab to a manual trans if you want it that bad. It's been done.

 

i know exactly what he's talking about. i HATE the feel of all drive by wire manual trans toyotas. they work fantastically on automatics, but the lag that they design into the system is extremely obnoxious if you're accustom to driving a traditional lag-free car. if i were to get a 2nd gen, i'd just get an auto. the 4.0's have enough power, and newer autos have soo much improved shift points and programming than old ones, i don't think i'd mind having one at all.

 

Never driven one, how does it feel & what is the issue that people dislike? Man it sounds like something I would absolutely hate too.

 

My 2010 is definitely a manual. Throttle by wire doesn't bother me in the least, but I suppose that's because I got used to it on my '06 Mazda3. Yes, the idle is a bit odd in the Tacoma. It really isn't difficult to drive, and several family members of mine haven't had an issue at all. I'd have to say the strangest aspect of throttle by wire (if you aren't used to it) is that the gas pedal doesn't move with the throttle position when cruise is on.

 

i had no fkn clue it held the throttle lol...

anyway what's the big problem the OP is having with drive by wire? i mean, you don't have the mechanical link sure, but you also don't have to worry about that mechanical link breaking.

 

Just this past weekend I was going down a 10% grade gas well road which was loose gravel. I had it in 4Lo and the gear shift in Lo. It walked down the hill with my foot off the brake. My daughter complained that we were going to slow. You can crawl down hills with an automatic if you really need too.

 

The "throttle by wire" system may be fine in some vehicles, but it is retarded on the Tacoma. As said, it may be fine with the automatics, but it's maddening with the MT.

I've gotten used to it somewhat, but I still absolutely hate it. I didn't realize just how bad it was when I first got the truck.

I had a friend drive my Tacoma for just a few miles last week. He was used to shifting a normal MT equipped vehicle. He said, "The engineers were out of their minds when they designed this thing". He's right. It's ridiculous.

I only really want a MT. When it comes time for a new vehicle, I'll test drive another Tacoma. If they haven't fixed that crap by then, I'll look at something else.

 

Weird. I've driven manuals all my life, and my 5-speed Tacoma drives pretty much like all the others I've ever driven. I can't tell that it's drive by wire vs an old mechanical linkage. Maybe I'm just not that sensitive?

 

Because your five speed is a 4cyl and what the consensus over 5000 threads about this was the V6 tends to hold the rpms and not so much on the 4cyl. Mine drop like a rock when I shift.

 

I can't tell the difference either. I think this is a mind over matter scenario

 

I thought my right foot was operating the throttle, not some Gennie in the bottle .

I find it works well (4cyl) foot off gas, in clutch, rpms drop; out clutch on gas rpm go back up.

Might just be a driver preference or hand / foot feeling thing.
