Just look at 2nd gen prices, they definitely benefited from the increased price and demand of 3rd gens.

@PuyallupJon Dealerships make hand over first on any Tacoma trade in. They give you auction prices and they sell it for more. A lot of thirsty Tacoma fans out there willing to pay for a used 2nd or 3rd gen. It doesnt help that this love for trucks we have has turned into this social media, look at me camping and in nature phenomenon. Dealerships make out like robbers on your trade in. Squeeze as much as possible brother.

True. They certainly don't give you what you could sell it for privately. Here in Washington State we get a tax break on the difference between the sale price and the trade in value only paying taxes on the difference.

For me it just always seems like a hassle dealing with clowns coming to look at and drive your rig as you try and sell it.

Right, the 3rd gens and wave of overlanding/what not has exploaded the demand for our trucks, funny if you've been around for awhile this was not the norm. Good perspective.

There is a tax benefit for trading your previous vehicle in, but if you sell your truck/car for ~$2-3k more than the dealer gives you, the tax benefit goes out the window. It’s not even close. Sell private every time. It is less hassle at the dealer but they will mark up your trade in by $5k because they can.

Depends on your state really. You don't pay tax on private vehicle sales where I live.

I’m also intrigued with Carvana. Don’t know much about it, but it could be a good negotiating tool with the dealer. Anybody have any dealings with Carvana that they can share?

Buddy of mine bought their last vehicle off of there. Said it was the best car buying experience he’s ever had it was used. I think the specialize in used vehicles.

There was a small issue with the vehicle when they received it and they had them take it to a local dealer and paid for everything to get it fixed. I think you get a few weeks to “test drive” it and make sure everything is good before having to buy.

Yep, with that said I was working 2 different dealerships and they were both at 500 over dealer cost (not invoice) so the one dealer says "our rep told us it can be done but it will be several months". Truth or sales pitch? Either way I'm not waiting because it's just another year on my 17' and less value. I can live without rear sonar since it has a camera and good ol' side mirrors.

@TacoBuffet I had a new 2007 Tacoma back in the days. NOBODY was overlanding. Everyone with Tacomas was going for the Baja off road truck look and performance. Now Instagram has exploded the whole overlanding thing sprouting a bunch of wanna be overlanders. Toyota isnt stupid. They have noticed and done their research. The demand has allowed them to raise their prices as well as seeing what Jeep is charging for their Gladiator.

I do know the price for "fully loaded" sometimes means cloth seats and sometimes leather. This has to be 2 grand difference I would think. But I havent figured it out yet.

Fully loaded should have leather. And the cameras all the way around.

Basically 2 big packages. One with everything minus the cameras. And one with everything + the cameras.

In respect of the great Indiana Jones, choose wisely.

From what I can tell, this whole “overlanding” thing is fancy car camping for typically a weekend. But maybe I missed something. :notsure:

I learned something new today. Overlanding. Sounds millenial’ish.

Yep, a tax break that benefits dealers only. In MO (where I used to live), if you sell a car and replace it within a period of time, you also get the tax credit, similar to a like-kind exchange. That is how it should be.
