Still have shimmey after new tires and aligment

Have a 03 2WD Auto with 16 in. tires Limited Prerunner 4 door. Bought used with 68,000 miles. Had a bad shimmey at around 65 MPH. Got new tires mounted and balanced. Had front end aligment also. Drives straight and still has a slight shimmey at 65 MPH. Its much better, but it is still there. Any other ideas. When brakes are applied hard, seems to have similar shimmey. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

 

Brake shimmy is usually warped rotors.

While driving, if alignment is good and wheels balanced, than it's probably worn suspension components; most likely worn ball joints.

Do you feel it more in the steering wheel or in the seat?

 

Mine does the same thing. I feel it in the steering wheel a lot when I brake. What would be the cause of this? New wheels, tires, balanced, aligned, and 5100s all the way around.

Sounds like two different shimmies.

The first, speed-specific shimmy is often caused by incompetent tire balancing, which is very common these days (and on this forum). I had new Michelins (stock size, stock wheels) put on mine with an alignment, and it shimmied on cue at 55-65. Took it to another shop who had their act together, and they got it right, first time. So eliminate the balance issue first before you attack other stuff.

Do you have the aluminum wheels? They are kind of notorious for being difficult to balance. Toyota has a special Haweka adpater they use, if another shop can't get it right. Also, they will likely need to add weights to the outside of the rim.

Brake shimmy? Warped rotors, most likely.

 

I have my tires balanced at a shop that does on the car balancing....they have balanced 2 tacos that i owned and it is perfect every time! Just had my new set of duratracs balanced today. Look for one around your area. They are pretty rare....

 

Thanks for the advise. Walley world mounted them, but I bought them from Discount Tire.com. And they still gave me a free lifetime of tire balance and rotation for $50.00 for mounting and everything. The tires that were on the truck were cupped inside and looked to have never been rotated. So when I went to get it aligned, the guy said it was in specs and just adjusted a small amount. I do have aluminum wheels. And you really don't notice it in the steering wheel, as much as the body itself. The ball joints were recalled and I called a toll free # for Toyota and was told it had the recall work done. But wouldn't give me any details of when or where the work was done. Big Seceret I guess. How about u joints?

Check your tire pressure. Tire shops are notorious for over inflating tires.

You'll have register, put in the vin#, you'll then have access to any records kept by Toyota on your truck, including when and where the ball joints were done.

 

I was kinda thinking the same thing as far as bent center hub or warped lug holes in rim..
