From a stop, the truck will lurch upon shifting into drive or reverse. Is this normal? I’ve driven an old Chevy truck that did this, didn’t expect from a 2018 Toyota. It’s not a giant big deal, just curious if this is something worth mentioning to the dealership, or if it does this on all of them.

Normal, or at least mine does it. If you let it come out of fast idle, it no longer will "leaps" when shifting into gear.

Again that is how my 2018 works.

Normal to a point, depends on if it’s excessive.

Normal, give the motor a few seconds for the rpm to drop when you start it and don't start off with ECT on before you shift. Should help

When you start your vehicle, it will idle slightly higher than normal ( give or take normal idle is around 800 rpm, the slight high is around 1100) it will kick into low idle at 800ish. When you shift, it will flare up as well. If you are in high idle (1100ish) and shift into gear it will lurch ever so slightly. In my tacoma, if I decide I need to move before the high idle is slowed to normal, extra pressure on the brake to anticipate the surge. Otherwise wait just a few seconds ( I know, starts as a pain in the ass) do my seat belt, check blind spots, gauge cluster for CEL, TPMS ect and by then it is under low idle.

Mine has started to do this like crazy and I've talked to Toyota a couple of times. I've got 13k miles on the clock and they want $200 plus tax to check the ATF since I don't really have the most convenient way to do the check myself, but I am pretty scared by the way my transmission lurches at this point, especially when trying to overdo a shift change midway. I feel my truck is sloppy as **** to be honest. :(

Everytime you start a thread you get some wild comments , don't worry about them . Find a truck at the dealer with the same motor and tranny , start it and see if it acts any different . Gl .

Mine does it if I'm not holding the brake hard enough

I tried this, you’re right. It helps a bit, Thank you. Also getting used to using the ebrake even on flat ground helps. Learning all the strange quirks about these trucks! Every vehicle has some!

The Toyota Tacoma head engineer claims they have addressed this issue on the 2020 models. Saw an interview with him and he spoke about the numerous upgrades on the 2020 models.

I have an 09 Camry which likes to lurch if I don't wait for the rpms to drop. I always wait 60-90 seconds before putting it into gear. Rpms are in the range of 2k, and if I wait a minute or so, they will drop to 400-500.
My truck luckily doesn't exhibit this "feature". After reading multiple threads about it though, I was ready to wait before selecting a gear.

That’s interesting, thank you. I guess they’re having to be more competitive . . . the midsize truck segment just got pretty crowded. Pretty sure the Jeep Gladiator is going to take some market share from the Taco TRD, but maybe less if they refresh and improve.

Was the interview you saw with the TFL YouTube channel?
