My 2.7 dc with a camper shell takes me to work every day 100 miles commute and I ALWAYS get nothing less than 23mpg when I don’t drive 75 I’ll see as high as 25-26 mpg. I love it.

they are great for daily driver/commuter trucks, economical, and still have a real work truck when needed, these plus's offset the less powerfull engine compared to the v6, plus you can do all the maintainence work yourself to offset those costs

Since 1984 I’ve had 7 Toyota pickups and an FJ Cruiser. Last time I lost my mind and bought a Nissan Titan. Nothing wrong with the Titan, it’s a beast with that 5.6 V8, but it’s not a Toyota. I’ll be 60 soon and getting close to retirement. I’ve been looking at Tacoma’s again, and am NOT a fan of the new 3.5 V6. So my options seem to be a 2014 or earlier Taco with the 4.0 (great motor) or a new or newer used Taco with the 2.7. And this one will be a 4x4. I really like the idea of the 2.7, it could be the last truck I’ll ever need.

Local dealer has an extremely low mileage access cab SR, 2.7 4x4 with 4.30 axles. It’s very tempting, I’m going to go test drive it in the next day or two. I had a 2012 “lowboy” access cab with the 2.7 auto combo. Bought it when I lived in Texas and it did great, moved to Arkansas and it didn’t like towing a fairly heavy boat up these hills. I have a much smaller boat now, and may sell it as I’ve gotten into kayak fishing. I’m just a bit worried about how much the 4x4 drivetrain would penalize the 2.7.

Is there any reason other than lack of a manual transmission to avoid the new 2.7 Tacos?

I have a 2017 and the only issue I had was Toyota had to replace the instrument cluster under warranty due to a faulty speedometer. Other than that I have had no issues and I drive it like I stole it.... I do have a 5 speed though. So far my truck has been pretty bulletproof.

I have a 17 2.7 5speed 4x4, dont think being a 4x4 handicaps it at all. Had a thought of trading for a 2.7 4x4 with the auto as im 53 and at times get tired of the 5speed. Found a mint 16 2.7 4x4 auto with 11,000 miles, drove fine power seemed good thanks to the 4.30 gearing. Only problem i had was when using cruise, acts just like the 3.5 with the 6speed auto, cant make its mind up on which gear it wants. Made me appreciate the 5speed.
    Hope this helps

I’m not interested in a manual. My wife wouldn’t drive it, and that’s part of the reason to get rid of the Titan. She’s intimidated by it, and her 5’ nothing frame isn’t big enough to see over the hood very well.

I’ve ruled out the 3.5, it just isn’t what I want. So that leaves me with a new or low mileage 2.7 or a 2nd gen with the 4.0, but all of these seem to have 60-80k miles at a minimum.

I really liked the 2016 2.7L auto. trans when I test drove it. Yes, they'll be occasional gear-hunting on inclines at highway speeds, but that's expected with 159hp in a 4,100lb vehicle.

I felt the same as you, just when using cruise it was annoying to me. Friend has a toyota mini van that shifts crazy, so just isnt a Tacoma thing

The 2.7 is a good motor you don't have to worry about. A little slack in the power department but worth the trade off. The 6 speed auto is a little quirky but behaves better with the 4 cyl than with the 6..imho

What a great thread guys! If I didn't use my truck for heavy towing, I would have gotten a Gen3 2.7L for sure.

my last 4cyl truck was a 92 Nissan Truck. Next truck was a full size 07 Nissan Titan (sucker ran well). Now have the Tacoma 4 cyl. Granted I have only had it about 5 weeks, I really like it. Won't tow and haul like the Titan, but that's ok for as often as I need to do either of those tasks.
Both Nissans were red. The tacoma is white. And as I have stated before, the toyota fits in the garage. The Nissan really didn't even come close. Guess I could have moved. :)

Funny thing is, right now I’m driving a second gen Titan, and it’s red. The motor in it is a beast, at least it is when you wind it up. 390 hp.

The 2.7 and a MT is the perfect combination.

I should have kept this one, it just didn’t like towing my old boat up and down the hills here.

It may get slightly worse MPGs depending on how you drive. I wouldn’t hesitate with it, though. Those are good engines.
