2020 Tacoma Teased

My wife has a '19 Highlander (which I love) that has all the cool stuff my '17 Sport doesn't. The ACC is a godsend, and there is a button on the steering wheel that lets you pick 3 different settings. I never use the max (3 bars), always set it on the minimum, which is just right for my taste. The one thing that drives me crazy, and y'all can tell me if it's on the newer Tacos, is the thing where the engine shuts off at stoplights. I know there is a button that you can turn it off with, but it always defaults on. Drives me insane when I forget.

 

SAME! I was going to pull the trigger on a 2018 Pro a last year, but caught wind that the 2020 was going to fix essentially every aspect of the truck that I disliked...and dropped that sweet sweet AG/OD green.

 

The stop-start tech is stupid in a non-hybrid vehicle. Supposed to be efficient on gas, but man, it is an annoying feature.

 

Yeah, figured as much, but how hard is that gas savings on the starter? I can't imagine it's good.

 

Wait, so the Tacoma's ACC won't take you to a full stop if traffic comes to a stop? Or will it take you to a full stop but just not start going again? One of the big safety features of ACC IMO is full stop in the event of a sudden highway backup.

 

My understanding is they put in a more robust battery and starter system to account for the additional work it will require over its service life. I just don't like it. I wouldn't mind it if it was a hard switch that you could choose to keep on or off. Having to turn off every time you start the car is a PITA.

 

I tried it today and it clicked off at around 20 MPH. My wife’s Prius prime will stop completely and start again without it turning off. I need to figure out how to get that working on my Tacoma.

Funny how no one actually answered that question in all that. No, it does not.

No, the Tacoma does not bring you to a full stop with the cruise control. It cuts out around 25mph I believe. There is the pre-collision system (PCS), but that is for stopping in an emergency, not everyday traffic.

 

Yeah all manufacturers are going to move towards it. It is one way to get some mpg progress towards CAFE standards without having to completely redesign engines.

 

My wife's Volvo has it and I fucking hate it. I won't back out of the garage without putting it in Polestar (sport) mode which turns that horse shit off. It doesn't seem to bother her though. Other than that, it is a very nice car I have to say. I was in favor of it for the safety since my wife and two kids are primarily in that vehicle but I have to say I like driving it.

 

I guess every little bit helps but there have been studies which shows stop/start nets roughly a .1 MPG increase. This 'feature' is a total miss in my opinion.

 

It's been around for a while now in Europe. I don't care either way. It would be nice to flash that off permanently for those of us that despise it.

 

It used to default to on all the time for BMW, then they got smart and allowed you to switch it off once and be done with it. Its a little silver button right next to START/STOP.

So if someone pulls in front of you on the highway then slams on the brakes, you're saying the TSS is going to slow you down to 25mph then let you crash in to the car in front of you? Or at 25mph the cruise shuts off and the pre-collision system takes over to stop you if needed? How can you rely on a system that might put you in an unsafe situation? I'm supposed to trust the system to work in highway traffic, but be ready to brake at any second in case the slow down drops below 25 mph and this "safety feature" turns off? WTF?

No, if it is an emergency stop situation the pre-collision executes emergency braking and ACC is disenaged just like if you hit the brake manually.
