Ha. 4x4 trucks that get eaten by snowbelt area salt and they also give you warranty grief when they find out it has been off road.

Any 2016 second owners get this letter. I just bought mine about a month ago and I am curious if I will get the letter or the previous owner already got it and did nothing or just traded in.

Just got my letter yesterday. Trying to decide if I get the spray done at my 40,000 oil change which will be around January, or wait and get it after the winter. Eastern MA here

If I was you, I’d get the truck cleaned up, power wash the underside as good as you can and get it coated before the snow fly’s. I wouldn’t care if it was a little early on the oil change. You don’t want to go get it coated in the middle of the winter while the frame is covered in salt and crap

Good point. I'll just have the dealer do the 35k mile tire rotation and this at the same time

Is Toyota spec-ing poor quality steal for the frames or the supplier is not doing a good job making the frames?

I went to a car show in late 2015 when they had a brand new 2016 Tacoma on display. I looked over the vehicle and checked underneath to see how different it it was. What I saw was exposed frame welds rusting. I documented everything in the thread linked below. I was laughed at and ridiculed as other members tried to make excuses for what it was.......

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2016-taco-at-car-show-with-rust.403026/

"Hey guys. A little bit about my background with Toyotas. I previously had a 4th gen 4Runner V6 (sold). I currently have a 2007 FJ Cruiser and a 2004 Land Cruiser.

I previously looked at Tacoma's a couple of years ago for the versatility of the bed. But I halted my search as I figured a redesign was on the way in the hopes of something better coming out. Also if any issues on the 2nd gen would be corrected for the 3rd gen.

The auto show came to town and figured now would be the chance to get an up close look at various models from different manufacturers all at once in one place. There was a Tacoma there and I got up close and personal with it. I remember seeing something in the 2nd gen section about rust, so I looked underneath the truck and was kind of disappointed at what I saw.

6 miles on the odometer and there are multiple rust spots all over the welds.

    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

I'm not sure if I'm being too hard, or if this is a new industry standard. But these trucks are nearly $40,000. They had a 2016 4Runner and 2016 Land Cruiser that didn't have these rust spots.

Is this "normal" for a Tacoma?"

Toyota prides itself on reliability. Their Tacoma frames are reliably rusty. You can count on it.

i have minimal deets on this so the jury is still out, but this image just popped up on the 1st gen forums the other day
a 2oo4 model that was possibly sprayed with whatever they used to respray frames that had passed the hammer test
still no accurate concrete deets so I am throwing #s out there as a very concerned long-time Toyota owner

this may have been sprayed 10 years ago and has now turned into this mess somehow

Par for course with that rubberized junk. It’s a terrible idea and shame on Toyota for even suggesting it, let alone requiring it. Bunch of a-holes IMHO.

how do you keep it clean during the winter
i have asked a few that use the FF and hose the slop off during the winter and they have said the FF just washes right off with the pressure wand

That’s slag, not rust. The coating doesn’t like to adhere to that.

That still doesn’t take away from the fact that these frames are also shit. Pretty much after one winter all the parts on the underside look several years old. I’ve never seen other brands this bad in close to the same time frame, and have worked on multiple vehicles from all manufacturers.

Rusty frames is a Toyota speciality. I’m considering a Ranger frame swap on mine.

i can agree with this after personal experience of 2+ decades and some DD research
the shit delaminates with ease in spots that do not ever get cleaned properly (extremely difficult to reach in sub-freezing temps at the DIY wash with spray wand)
