1987 Toyota Pickup

I wasn’t sure where to post this. I found a 1987 Toyota pickup with 105k miles on it. I can’t find much info on that year truck. Can anyone provide information or their thoughts on that model? It’s not a Tacoma correct?

 

Its a Toyota Pickup. That generation, like most Toyotas is famous for rust. Especially on the bed sides and rocker panels. My dad had an 86 that he could look down at the road while driving in lol. Carburated 22R, very little horsepower, scary to drive on roads/interstates with modern cars.

Unless your planning on making it a trail queen thats towed every where (what their best at, imo) Id pass.

 

Not an Tacoma by name but it is basically the "The Toyota Truck" that evolved into the Tacoma along with the T100 the 87 Toyota 4 X 4 awesome truck. (had one) with the 22-R engine and 4 speed manual.

 

The 86's were fuel injected. The 22R-E was introduced in 82. The 22RE is a bullet proof motor. While they don't make a lot of POWER, they don't need to.

As for the rust thing, just like with any used vehicle purchase, just inspect it carefully. I wouldn't say the pickups are "known" for rust, but that's more location dependent. Pretty much any vehicle that spends 30 years on salted roads will rust. Not really unique to Toyota.

That's one of the first couple years with IFS. While I wouldn't want one as a daily driver, I know plenty of people with old ass cars as their daily drivers. It's all preference, and what you intend to do with it.

 

great trail machine but rust like they been sitting in the ocean. My first vehicle was an 84 with solid front axle, leaf springs all around, and manual locking hubs. Absolutely bullet proof but literally rusted in half (frame)

The 86 my father had was carbed. They didnt go to 100% fuel injected in the pickups until 1989, when the third generation was released. I wouldnt call the 22RE a bulletproof motor by any means. The one in my garage is slurping up coolant into the oil....again. Gonna get a second opinion on it before I yank the head. If it is the headgasket, this will be the second one in 40k miles. Good chance the timing cover is cracked behind the water pump though, they are known for that.


In my humble opinion, anybody who is quick to say that "the 22re is a bulletproof motor" hasnt owned one themselves and is just repeating what they read on the interwebs. Go over to yotatech.com, there are just as many threads about the 22RE having headgasket issues as the infamous 3.0 V6. It may just be slightly less common in the 22RE's. Also, the plastic timing chain guides are quick to wear out and end up floating in the oil pan, bringing a loud knock with them.

Im glad that the one thats been nickle and dimeing my family for years will be gone soon. Going up for sale once the current coolant issue is figured out.

 

i traced the blue 95 22re i had for a couple years via autocheck and it ended up with something like a steering column linkage recall in 2oo5 iirc and finished its days (in the USA at least) at ~239k miles ... might have been sent to south of the border, who knows ... no other records past 2oo5

Yes, my 92 had that done. Supposed to be free, yet the dealer made us pay for bolts that they snapped.

HaHa I hope you enjoyed it. Our machines and memories travel togeather. I owned a 1978 Datsun 5 speed 620 prior to the 87 yoda in the story. Way more and better stories about the red Dot.

 

We all know you're salty when it comes to the 22RE and the Trucks they were in. It's a good truck and engine in the right hands and in the right climate. There wouldn't be so much demand and aftermarket support if they weren't.

 

Still Having a few they are Toyota 4x4 vehicles.

Depending where they live the liquid brine is a killer I saw less rust on the mid eighties pick ups then the early Tacoma`s.

You can run any vehicle into the ground

They came in either the carbed or EFI depending on how the truck was built .

They used to be my daily drivers till the 3.4 spoiled me

Another down side is Horsepower is built in the head and very expensive per horse power .

My first Toyota Pick up was a 1975 Hilux with a 20R engine and at that time Toyota did not offer factory 4 x 4 so a company in CA was installing Jeep 4 X 4 front axle and transfer case installed on a modified Toyota 4 speed and it had custom built leaf springs it was one hell of a truck (my high school daily driver) that with pro help we installed a Pair yes 2 dual side draft Weber 45 mm carbs on it and oh that was a blast to drive maybe not the fastest but sure sound the baddest ass thing...... Sold it because I kept breaking it and could not afford to keep fixing it all the time then and brought a 68 MGT <------ total mistake but again fun.
