Frame coverage for 2011+

I don't think I have any underbody photos in the gallery and I am away from the truck this weekend. I'll look, but will also try to snap a few next week.

Frequent washing is best!

 

i prefer the hand wand washing to get every spot i can reach, its just so cold out some days!
and now I learn that a lot of the car washes are required to recycle the water from the cars before which is just spraying down with diluted salt water

 

Does this possible frame replacement apply to regular cabs as well? Mine is fine, but since they haven't made the reg cab in 5 years they may not have frames available.

 

It's not terrible the problem I found that you have to apply it in fall and in the spring because it won't last washes off. I don't understand people telling apply Fliud film then hose down the frame in the winter to get the salt off. It just defeats the purpose your washing away the fluid film especially those commercial car washes that water does have some force behind it.

I know , I followed what was said on these forums.I now use ospho ,primer , Eastwood internal frame protector, Eastwood black chases paint then Amsoil heavy duty metal protector my frame looks better after the winter no where near as much touch up the following spring. My .02 and 7 years of trail and error.I finally got a regime that works for me.

No that should not matter that its canadian. It has already made it to service departments that dealer probably just has not look at there bulletin yet

Man.... Local dealership has a low-mileage 2011 TRD OR on the lot that's tempting me. Anyone have a guess if I would be eligible for this program or not if I bought the truck in the next couple weeks?

Yeah, I'm kind of assuming so, but I guess I'm afraid of a situation where I'll hear "well, we sent those letters out but you didn't own your truck at that exact second so you're SOL." I may go check it out tomorrow, so I'll be sure and ask.

 

It's going to be interesting to see how the Canada/US thing plays out on the 11-17 frame swaps. On the 05-10 court ordered settlement, the US settlement specifically stated that trucks imported from other countries don't qualify. There was a different settlement for Canada. I had to take my Canadian Taco up to Canada for inspection and approval. I am currently waiting for my new frame to be built and then I'll need to take it back to Canada for replacement.

 

So if I live in FL, i get screwed, even though I could hypothetically move to a cold weather state in the future....that's pretty screwy.

 

I just purchaesed my 2015. It spent most of its life in Illinois but lives in Alabama now. I see minor rust spots on frame. Does anyone know how this would shake out for me? Id like to get it coated but do you think I'd have to take it to one of the listed states?

 

Cold states: District of Columbia (DC), CT, DE, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VA, VT, WI, and WV.

Huh...CO isn't listed as a cold state? I do have light rust in some places on my '14 that I'm keeping an eye on.

No I live in the PNW where they salt the roads, but I guess our salt is different?. I have been religiously cleaning , painting and fluid-filing my frame in hopes it lasts. Rust starts, but I get on it.

Here is my beef with Toyota:

The Tacoma frame has always several pockets that collect silt and do not self-clean and are hard to wash. The gas-tank support member, the carrier bearing sub-frame, and the spare tire cross-brace are all either up-ward facing U-Channels (kinda dumb),or have pockets where they join to their main frame ladders. All of these areas pack up with silt and do not wash out on their own. Unless you climb right under the truck and reach right in there with a hose, they will become salty pucks of mud that sit there eating into the metal.

If Toyota designs such a frame, they should at least paint it with the best paint they can find, or use whatever Ford is applying. The double-whammy is they have a corrosion encouraging frame-design, coupled with very poor paint.

It’s a shame, but it keeps Fluid Film in business I guess.

 

i will put this out there:

I am thinking of creating a list, maybe with pictures, of all the trouble spots in a Tacoma frame that collect the worst of the mud and salt and do not self clean (when driving through the rain). This is more for my own memory, as I always seem to miss a few spot and find a pocket of sand a gravel when I am doing something else under the truck.

If these spots are not obvious to everyone, and there is interest here, I might think about sharing that on TW if it hasn’t already been done so.

 

So, here's an interesting experience I had today. I called to Toyota US to ask about the programs (for lack of better word, since they're not "recalls") K0D and ZKA and to find out if the truck I'm thinking about buying is eligible.

The girl on the phone said it wasn't listed under K0D but that it was eligible for ZKA and that if it rusted out before 2023, I'd get a new frame. But, based on the OP, it would have to be treated under K0D to be included in ZKA? Do I have that wrong?

 

My dealer gave me the run around and said my truck wasn't covered. The guy wouldn't really tell me anything and kept dodging questions. I'm going to a different dealer because it seems that all the tacomas from those years are eligible.

I’m pretty pissed 3rd gens are effected, but at the same time I knew better than to trust Toyota so took matters into my own hands when I first bought the truck. Definitely not keeping it for the long haul now, just because of the risk. And probably won’t consider another Toyota truck in the future. Over 2 decades and they still can’t build and coat a solid frame. Pathetic

I can use clarification on this too, if I have a 15, do I need to get K0D done to be eligible for ZKA?

I’d like to get K0D done as quick as possible so My truck can start preparing for ZKA lol, before I end up doing the frame my self in 2028 instead of Toyota in 2027... cause that’s my luck
