I would like to paint the hood and top of my 2004 Tacoma, doing this for protection more than looks. I was thinking of using Dupli-color (black) and their primer. Do I need to clear coat it also. As mentioned, this is for protection ( my be getting to rust point) not really for looks.

Not a professional by any means but ya i’d clear coat it especially if your main goal is rust protection. Leaving it w/o a clear coat would be pointless to be honest.

hood is easy take it off strip it and spray it, roof on the other hand... a little more finesse but still not that difficult, and yeah clear it or its gonna fade, rust, and just look bad.

Clear coat is a protectant, so yeah, I would.

You going to rattle can it?

Just remember that 90% of a good looking (and functioning) paint job is the prep work. Sand it down to remove the old clear coat and at least the top layer of paint.

I've also seen some people use like a bedliner material on their hoods (or their whole truck for that matter).

On the roof there is a rust prone area. Typically where the windshield meets the roof line there. If you can - remove the windshield so you can get all that sorted out. Probably a little rust under there. If you don't and you go and paint all that the rust will just keep moving. Damn shiz likes to eat Tacomas for lunch.

@Xbeaus being near the rust belt. I will now have nightmares of what is lurking behind my windshield seal of my truck.

I highly recommend vinyl wrapping it, less mess and a lot easier to pull of unless you're a professional painter, plus awesome protection.

This is soon on my list of things to do. Want to get ahead of the rust since my Jade Green Clear coat just went caput on both hood and roof.

My clear coat is starting to bubble on my hood. I'm thinking of wet sanding the rough spots of the clear coat and re - spray before it gets any worse.
